to wonder why some people are so pathetic when it comes to their cars and the snow

I live 2 miles from work. So I walked. The office is half empty. I can understand that for some of the staff because they live in the back of beyond or miles away and the snow was really bad this morning. But the majority of people working here are locals who drove in against all advice on the radio and in the face of common sense, and then panicked and drove back home again in case they got stranded Hmm.

Why can they not get out of their bloody cars and walk! It's perfectly safe underfoot - I walked in OK with a good pair of boots and well-wrapped up.

The factory staff have to work their normal shifts but the office staff have all buggered off when most of them could have found a way of getting in to work safely. I feel ashamed TBH - it's feels as if there's one rule for us and another rule for them.

i went into work as snow is no excuse even though we are out in the sticks..as my boss says, 'people are such wimps in the snow'. Although i am staying 12 miles away from my workplace right now, i actually live 60 miles away and to get to the place i'm staying at (for the purpose of working) took 5 hrs.
I urgently needed to go to bank so on route to work stopped at the nearest village to my work. And it was shut 'due to snow'. Now i know for a fact that this bank is staffed by locals..and not elderly locals. I DO NOT want a medal before anyone flames me..i'm just amazed locals couldnt walk in or drive when 'not locals' can make it

missmapp · 20/12/2010 17:01

dh has gone to work, as he has every day ,snow or no snow, if its bad he takes a change of clothes and stays overnight ( he works in London) but has so far always managed to get home. It seems to be the locals who dont bother, those with longer journeys alway seem to manage it

lololizzy · 20/12/2010 17:03

AnyoneforTurps · 20/12/2010 18:15

Blimey - and that's on the flat bit Shock. Definitely hoping Getorf's DP & DD are OK.

Limara · 20/12/2010 18:19

AnyoneforTurps yeah definately Shock

We've just rung around local shops to see if we can get bread and milk but so far no joyHmm

I'm finding it a little scary as all the main routes are closed. WTF?

AnyoneforTurps · 20/12/2010 18:24

There was milk at the Co-op opposite the station a couple of hours ago. Don't know about bread.

Rowgtfc72 · 20/12/2010 18:26

Two weeks ago we had major snow here in Lincolnshire .Took me an hour to walk to work.Strange, all the factory workers made it but the office staff were unable !

southeastastra · 20/12/2010 18:29

blimey at that clip! people are bonkers doing that speed, i keep looking out of my window when i hear a car and praying that they don't hit mine. feel for that woman who sounded hysterical

Ormirian · 20/12/2010 18:30

We were told we could go home at 4. So I walked home. No problems again. Cars still going very slowly. And my supermarket delivery was arrived just before I did. They had to park at the bottom of our hill and carry it all up. No wholemeal bread but everything else was there. Most impressed.

southeastastra that car was just coming down a very, very steep hill, so he would have had no choice, he would have picked up speed due to momentum.

Limara · 20/12/2010 18:35

AnyoneforTurps I'm in Charlton Kings, nightmare Sad Where are you?

AnyoneforTurps · 20/12/2010 18:37

Iwasthefourthwiseman · 20/12/2010 18:38

I was supposed to go and see Harry Potter in Cheltenham this evening. My first night out from the baby :(

Limara · 20/12/2010 18:39

Iwasthefourthwiseman Sad for you.

Iwasthefourthwiseman · 20/12/2010 18:43

What's worse is I won't be able to get dd1 to nursery tomorrow!

rookiemater · 20/12/2010 18:45

Agree with Ormirian.

We haven't had it so bad this time, but last time DS's nursery was shut so I packed him off to our neighbour who handily happens to be a registered childminder walked the half mile to the main road and took the bus to work. At our office ( where we get paid even if we can't make it in) about 50% of folk were in, fair enough a lot of people were working from home and some managed to work from local offices, but strangely enough all the shops were open, because I guess if they are not then the shop keepers don't earn money or the workers don't get paid.

Dh is a contractor so on the first really bad day he bought a second hand landrover Grin. At first I thought he was mad, but the bus route he could have used was closed for almost a week so it turned out to be a godsend.

Gogopops · 20/12/2010 18:49

I didn't venture to work in a blizzard today - cars skidding around everywhere. However, there's no snow forecast tomorrow so I'll try to get in by bus. Work is about 5 miles away so no problem to walk home if I cant get a bus back.
I banked a cheque on Friday (the bank was surprisingly open) but later on got a call from the bank to say that the cheque wont be credited to my account because the courier couldn't get to the bank to pick up the days work so I don't know when my Xmas money will be in my account.
I've had enough of this snow now!!

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 18:53

I feel like I have been driving everywhere at 20 mph max for a year.

swanandduck · 20/12/2010 19:46

I cannot believe the smugness of some people on this thread. Particularly that remark 'some people are such wimps in the snow'. It's that kind of crap that puts other people under pressure to skid and skate into work, abandon their cars in snow drifts and arrive home nervous wrecks.

Not excusing the people who just can't be bothered to get out of bed, but we had a discussion about this at work and agree that some people seem to enjoy going to extraordinary lenghts to get in and then making everyone else feel bad.

Iwasthefourthwiseman · 20/12/2010 19:55

Getorf, did your dh & dd get back yet?

Heroine · 20/12/2010 19:56

I know its pathetic. A guy in the bank today was complaining that he would have to drive home and how he 'crashed' his car on the way into work yesterday. His 'crash' was a skid at slow speed into the kerb, and when I asked him where he lived, expecting at least a country village type answer, he told me he lived LESS than 2 miles away (about a 15-20 min walk) and always drove. I said that he should walk in tomorrow, if he was worried, (it had started to snow again) and he said 'no its like miles, I'll drive in' what a lazy assed bugger I bet it costs him a fiver to park too.. sheesh!

roseability · 20/12/2010 19:56

Oh here come the snow martyrs again

Yawn

lololizzy · 20/12/2010 20:24

but,,,given people i know anyway...it's only ever the ones who get still PAID who decide to not go in on snow days!
