no you are not which is why i never send cards any more.

claig · 19/12/2010 10:54

YABU
Didn't Scrooge think about waste at Christmas? Aren't there more important things to think about at Christmas?

lololizzy · 19/12/2010 11:02

wasted food, cards , paper wrapping etc...this planet is dying because people think there are 'more important' things to think about. nice one! Hmm

hairyfairylights · 19/12/2010 11:05

We h.ave great recycling services including food waste

claig · 19/12/2010 11:05

'this planet is dying because people think there are 'more important' things to think about'

The planet's not dying. Someone's been having you on. Probably sustainability Scrooge and his green, envious friends.

This is the season of good cheer.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

lololizzy · 19/12/2010 11:29

the planet's not dying??! which planet are you on then??! Hmm
There is facility for food waste recycle but a lot of people are too lazy to bother.

claig · 19/12/2010 11:37

do you really believe that this wonderful planet and all of life on it are in danger of extinction because of wrapping paper and food slops?

Wake up, you've been had.

Enjoy your Christmas, buy lots of presents and leave the doom mongers and the dour Gordon Browns of the "we have only fifty days to save the planet" brigade to spread the message of Scrooge.

The only thing i don't recycle is food waste. From Feb next year, we will have to recycle all cooked and raw food.

When you do recycle your cardboard, glass, tins etc, it's amazing how much there is and how empty your wheelie is.

I will try to recycle this crimbo but it may over run me in my relatively small house what with all the presents to contend with.

FrostyTheCrunchyFrog · 19/12/2010 11:52

We aren't allowed to put wrapping paper in the blue bin. In fact, there are so few things we ARE allowed to put in that my black bin is always the full-to-overflowing one, I hate it.

But I have thought about it - aside from cost, it's part of the reason the DC's presents are mostly second hand, to save on packaging.

guhdoo · 19/12/2010 12:14

When out shopping in my local supermarket i noticed that alot of goods come in large bulky packaging, so after its been scanned and before i put it in my(reusable) shopping bag i usually discard any unneeded packaging (obviously i do this very quickly so not to offend the waiting queue behind)
Let the supermarket dispose of it and if they dont like it they can review the packaging rules .

Then I leave with my shopping (eggs in pocket)
:o

Greenshadow · 19/12/2010 12:16

but egg boxes at least go on the compost heap Guhdoo!

we recycle absolutely everything we can in terms of paper and cards and wraping etc, it makes me angry to see the heaps and heaps of black sacks full of stuff my neighbours put out instead of recycling it

a couple of years ago one family put out 4 childrens bikes for the binmen when theirs got new - could not even be bothered to offer them on freecycle or put a sign on saying "FREE PLEASE TAKE ME". some people are living on a different planet, they really are.

beachholiday · 19/12/2010 14:41

I have taken to asking staff in toy shops etc to take off the packaging and I just take the toy home. Probably wouldnt if there was a queue but has worked well for us and staff were much quicker getting through those bloody wire ties etc than I would be.

nannynobblystockingnobs · 19/12/2010 14:41

Our recycling bin is always full by collection day, our rubbish bin hardly ever. The rabbit gets the raw veg waste, stale bread etc. The dog often gets what little cooked waste there is, depending on what it is (he's not a porker, honest :))
I don't think we have too much packaging to worry about this year, apart from the damn wrapping paper. I think we might burn it

Bikes out for the bin men, that's disgusting :( when we needed rid of the two kiddy slides from our garden, we stuck a sign on them saying 'Free, please take me' and they were gone within the hour- ditto our old but working fridge and freezer.

FrostyAndSlippery · 19/12/2010 14:48

I do what I can. But unfortunately some of our recycling is having to go in the rubbish ATM. Because the collectors just skip us in the snow, they don't make up for missed days, and they don't empty the bin if its overfilled. Our house is so tiny there's nowhere to store recycling.

I'm all for doing things at an individual level but big global corporations and the general leaning of society Towards an overreliance on cars, planes etc is much more responsible IMO.

AMumInScotland · 19/12/2010 14:57

Our recycling bin is full, and there are enough bags in he garage to refill it if/when they ever get here to empty it. And that's even before any extra mess over Christmas!

Our council had bin lorries in supermarket carparks to collect bagged waste from people whose bins had not been emptied, and the guy just said "Oh you can bring that here too" when Iasked about recycling! So that's the only option atm - just throw it in landfill with the rest...

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 19/12/2010 15:08

I'm putting DS2's old bike out (he also got a new one for his birthday) for the bin man.

It looks fine .......until you look close up and see that it's really not in any fit state to be ridden. I certainly wouldn't want to offer it to anyone, I picked up for £3 from the scrap man as it was........

I always recycle what I can though - I find jumping in the recycling bin (and making sure you squash everything before it goes in as well) allows much more stuff to be put in it Xmas Grin
