To be considering driving from the SW to Yorks in this?

In two minds: supposed to be going to my mum's in Yorks next week and was going to drive (most Ms 5, 6, and 62). Driving is cheaper and way more convenient than the train because I've got a lot of stuff. Also don't too much sitting in traffic for an hour or two cos it's a long journey anyhow. Can turn the engine off and read or something.

But my DM keeps telling me not to, it's not safe, etc. I think she's exaggerating, it's not like the whole country's shut down and surely the motorways are navigable? AIBU?

Don't mind sitting in traffic.

What day next week? Will you have DC with you? I think all you can do is see how the roads look on the day and make a decision then.

Check here before you go; the M5 is dire atm, though the 62 is pretty clear.

I'd reasses next week tbh.
DH is struggling to get home from work and pick up DD from work.
We're A1 about 1/2hr north of London area, wouldn't advise travelling here!

GypsyMoth · 18/12/2010 17:26

what if weather turns and you can't get back??

Hey OldLady (that sounds kind of disrespectful, eh Grin), that's a really good link will check it out the day before.

No, no DCs (still at the hopeful stage). Would be going for a couple of weeks so not too worried about the return journey yet...

Well then just check the traffic before you go, we moved house in the middle of the last snowy spell (London to Norfolk) and while parts of the M25 and SE were completely impassable, the sections we needed to travel on were completely clear.

Thanks Meg. Not really going near London (leaving from Devon) so fingers xed, as all the bad stuff seems to be round the M25 way.

My parents are currently stuck overnight having tried to go from somerset to warwickshire. So currently, id say don't do it.

That's terrible bramble :( Hope they have found a hotel or similar and are not just on the road...

Thanks. They have now and dad has got a good supply of his meds.

I hope they are sensible about travelling tomorrow and stay put if necessary.

If you do decide to do it and the weather conditions are similar to what they are now then please make sure you kit out the car appropriately (ie so you could spend the night in it in sub-zero temps if necessary). So food/hot drinks/several blankets/winter coats, hats and gloves for all/ something to pee in/torch etc. Oh and a shovel and something to put under the wheels so you can unstick yourself if possible (and you are not in a huge queue of traffic).
