An ex today informed me that he'd spent nearly 1000 euros on crystal tumblers from Prague - 6 tumblers, 6 small glasses and 6 shot glasses.

He thought it made him cool. I thought "WTF?"

Shirley do you think 18 glasses for 1000 euros is worth it? Are they really that good?

Bibbity I hate conspicuous consumption. I don't 'get' brands either, or even the obsession I, as a woman, am supposed to have with shoes and handbags. All it means is more decisions I have to make before I leave the house and also transfer everything over from bag to bag, which means I'm likely to forget something. I have my favourites anyway so would always end up wearing the same ones!

Well I feel a bit guilty now MBC. Coming from a poorer background (get the violins Grin ) I totally get the need to validate yourself through buying things.

But really, invite someone like me round for drinks and they will get smashed. Spend it on something worthwhile - like property or class A pharmaceuticals

MyBrilliantCareer · 17/12/2010 22:11

Grin @ the pharmaceuticals TS.

Don't feel guilty. It's not through just buying things that he tries to validate himself. He earns an above average wage. He also always has to be right. I went to primary school with him so know him and his background well enough.. so if anyone's going to be sympathetic and understanding of him, it should be me Hmm

6 is just ridiculous - he'll break one sooner or later and have 5, should've bought spares.

classydiva · 17/12/2010 22:12

Has it pissed you off he can afford to do that? Cos I wondered why the post about it?

MyBrilliantCareer · 17/12/2010 22:16

No it's not pissed me off cos I earn more than him. It's just that he's angling to come over to the UK and perhaps start something up with me again, and I'm thinking it through.

But these were the kind of rather pretentious (in my mind) things that annoyed me about him in the first place. And I've never heard of anyone spending so much on glasses - which might say a lot about me rather than him.

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 17/12/2010 22:26

No, honestly, it says a lot about him, not about you.

It says that he is a wanker.

Hth.

MyBrilliantCareer · 17/12/2010 22:29

What does Hth mean? I've been wondering for ages Xmas Blush

PsecretSantead · 17/12/2010 22:35

Hope that helps.

MyBrilliantCareer · 17/12/2010 22:36

Cheers. And yes, it did, both bibbity and PSS Grin

If you sleep with him then he'll think you were impressed Wink

I think it's a bit weird (to tell you, he can spend his money how he wants) and yes, unattractive.

At an office party a few years ago, one of my colleagues told me that his hideous shoes cost £250 but it was "totally worth it" because only a dozen pairs were ever made so "he could guarantee no one in the building was wearing the same shoes". Bearing in mind I was wearing a pair I got in a sale 15 years previously, I think I could probably hazard a pop at the same thing Wink

egopostulosomnus · 18/12/2010 09:31

ah now i think he was showing you, and telling you, that he is ready to settle down, and will happily feather your cosy little love nest with the most expensive luxuries he can afford, how sweet Xmas Grin

MyBrilliantCareer · 18/12/2010 10:14

hmmmm charming Xmas Grin

Confession time: I sometimes brag about how much I spent on something too. The difference is it is usually how little I managed to get it for, and it is usually to people that might be interested in bagging a similar bargain... AIBU??

I would like to comment on what I think about the op's ex's glasses - but I fear I may out myself as being a hypocrite!

MyBrilliantCareer · 18/12/2010 10:43

Oh go on JeezyPeeps! It's Christmas! Tell us!!

To be honest, that sounds right money for top quality crystal.
If it's his money & makes him happy, why not?
More attractive than blowing it on fags, fancy car hubcaps, booze or F1 tickets.

JeezyPeeps · 18/12/2010 10:51

ragged, how on earth can buying glasses be more attractive than buying F1 tickets? That is just not logical - I'd drink my wine out of a mug if it mean't going to see the total awesomeness that is F1.

Sadly I have yet to meet a man that thinks it is a good way to spend money (other than my dad and my son...)

(I agree with fags, hubcaps and booze though, it if helps!)

ragged · 18/12/2010 14:21

That was a bit of a joke... although I really don't understand the appeal of spectating at motor racing. Or wanting to spend vast sums to do so! (the whining noise of the cars is far worse than fingernails on blackboards, imvho).

I was countering the generally catty tone of the thread. To each their own :)?
