To not give sil dd's ipod

santadefiesgravity · 14/12/2010 23:14

Through no fault of her own dd's ipod was accidentally broken so she is getting a new upgraded one for Christmas.

Dneice has the same ipod but sil took out insurance for it. She wants to upgrade too so has asked if we will give her dd's broken one so that she can claim on the insurance and put the money towards a new one.

I'm not comfortable with this. My mum who used to work for an insurance comapny says its fraud and contributes to higher premiums. Dh and mil think I am being unreasonable.

YANBU. It is fraud.

AngelZigzagsSparklyYuletideLog · 14/12/2010 23:17

I wouln't feel comfortable doing that, if you don't, don't do it Smile

Sorted.

narkypuffin · 14/12/2010 23:17

No. That's all you need to say. If it's any kind of insurance that requires the broken ipod to be seen- presumably it is- they'll have the serial numbers on record and it'll be obvious that she's making a fraudulent claim.

SlartyBartFast · 14/12/2010 23:17

why didnt you ahve to send your dd's broken one back?

TottWriter · 14/12/2010 23:17

YANBU. It is fraud, so don't do it.

Stick to your (very sensible) morals. If your SIL wants a new ipod that badly she can trash her own daughters for the upgrade. On her head be it.

scurryfunge · 14/12/2010 23:17

Of course it is fraudulent. Nice example your SIL wants to set.

BreconBeBuggered · 14/12/2010 23:18

No, I wouldn't be comfortable with that either. It's the kind of thing my BIL might ask me to do. YANBU.

werewolf · 14/12/2010 23:19

YANBU. I wouldn't be comfortable with it either.

Can't you just say you thought the serial numbers would be different or somesuch and bin the broken one?

PaisleyLeaf · 14/12/2010 23:21

Why can't she just break her own one?

RudolphReindeerTuppennyTail · 14/12/2010 23:24

Give your DD's broken one to your husband and have nothing more to do with it. Tell them it's fraud but they can do what they like.

NYP.

santadefiesgravity · 14/12/2010 23:25

I didn't send dd's back as we don't have the insurance and I think it is unrepairable. It got very wet and was switched on before it dried out.

I did wonder about serial numbers. Sil also works for the store where they were bought 3 years ago.

OP posts:
SlartyBartFast · 14/12/2010 23:27

oh i see, you just replaced it yourself.

i am sure they would know.

A1980 · 14/12/2010 23:34

If she wants to claim on the insurance for a broken iPod she can break her daughters iPod and make a claim.

Let her be the one to commit insurance fraud. At least the serial numbers will match if she breaks her own one. If she is only buying her DD a new one if she can get insurance money then she runs the risk of the claim not being accpeted in which case she's lost a perfectly good iPod and her DD then wont have one at all. The new iPod's are shit anyway, I hate the new Nano in particular.

YANBU by the way. Insurance fraud is a criminal offence as far as i know. Let her dig that hole if she wants to.

narkypuffin · 14/12/2010 23:35

If she wants to she could easily do the same to her daughter's ipod- get it wet and switch it on. She wants to keep the old one and get a newer one. The fact that she works there makes it worse. She's planning on fixing the serial numbers by dealing with it herself?

Accidently bin your DD's ipod. Or point out that she's a deceitful skank. But the first option will probably cause less friction.

SlartyBartFast · 14/12/2010 23:36

i bet she gets a staff discount?

MilkNoSugarPlease · 14/12/2010 23:36

YANBU, they'll have the number on the back of the Ipod on file...the one you use to register it with Itunes

it won't match and they'll know!

shelscrape · 14/12/2010 23:37

YANBU - what your SIL wants to do is fraud

santadefiesgravity · 14/12/2010 23:37

LOL narkypuffin, I would be the dil from hell with the 2nd option!!!!!

OP posts:
kitbit · 14/12/2010 23:39

Yep, let her break her own and claim. Don't get involved.
It IS fraud and it DOES contribute to higher premiums for the rest of us Angry

santadefiesgravity · 14/12/2010 23:42

I always feel that these store insurance policies are bad value thats why I don;t usually take them out. Ok on this occasiona it would have been useful but it is counterweighed by all the countless other stuff we havn't taken out.

I had decided that I would go with the general opinion. Am off to accidentally lose the ipod.

OP posts:
A1980 · 14/12/2010 23:50

You could say someone at Apple recommended sending it back with a view to repairing it, then they could lose it or not send it back as it's not possible to repair it?!

Tell her you threw it away.

A1980 · 14/12/2010 23:53

PS you're right about store insurance policies. As you said the iPod's are 3 years old. Even if the policy was only £2 a month, multiply that by 3 years and you've spent £72 which would go a long way to buying a new ipod if you saved that money instead.

TheBeast · 15/12/2010 05:05

If the SIL deliberately breaks her iPod and makes claim, that is fraud, too.
