I hate small girls who do plays and expect you to be their audience

After 16 years of just boys I have entered a horrible phase with my 6 year old girl where her friends come round and work out plays and then expect to perform them to me

I can't stnad it

I found myself explainging today that they need to stop and the important thing about a story is a start, middle and end

big old emphasis on end

Oh you spoil-sport

I love it when my dds do 'plays'

Their dancing is second-to-none Hmm

NorbertDentressangelOnTheTree · 14/12/2010 21:32

Oh God, I'd happily forgotten about that stage until you reminded me.

It was painful.

activate · 14/12/2010 21:32

are you being ironic?

They sell us tickets and programmes and everything

And tell us when we need to clap etc

And dictate to DP what type of music he needs to play

lukewarmcupofmulledwine · 14/12/2010 21:33

Erm, you know yabu I hope? Smile

Can you do secret phone mumsnetting whilst their budding acting careers take off?

SlightlyJaded · 14/12/2010 21:33

oh dear, you are in for some hard times I fear.

Just wait till she can play recorder. I promise you the 'plays' will seem like joyful moments in a spa by comparison to the music 'concerts' you will have to endure. And then will come the 'dance shows' and oh, I could go on but I don't want to depress you any further.

Can you plug your ipod in, cover your ears with your hair? That way you can enjoy some music or a lovely audio book and do lots of nodding and smiling Grin.

rudolphscarrotcakeywakey · 14/12/2010 21:33

Ha, ha, have they started choreographing dances to the latest NOW album yet? You're going to love that phase Grin

oh i love it my my son does this, and can't wait for my daughter to follow.

it wont last long, you'll have a stroppy teen before you know it...just enjoy it while it lasts

ShanahansRevenge · 14/12/2010 21:35

My DD sets up chairs and invites pasing strangers! It's awful...especially when I find myself thinking "My DD should have played the part of the Pink Princess..not that bossy madam from down the road!"

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 14/12/2010 21:35

God - all 3 of my DS's do this!

notnowbernard · 14/12/2010 21:35

Am being serious! I love seeing them act stuff out, it's hilarious

I love it that they love what they've made-up

undertheboredwalk · 14/12/2010 21:35

I hated that phase too, the vitally important performance always had to be done when I was right in the middle of something too.
I don't get plays any more, Dd(9), I get dance routines and songs now, how fab for me Hmm

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 14/12/2010 21:36

I'm with you on this Activate. DD and her friend are now starting to outgrow this phase, thank heavens, but I lost count of the number of interminable 'shows' I had to sit through whilst they performed their dance numbers and sang loudly and badly in American Confused accents. Of course, I'd usually end up getting the giggles and having to try and hide them with shoulders shaking Grin

bitsyandbetty · 14/12/2010 21:36

My 6 year old does the same and it is tedious and I keep clapping after about 5 mins to signal end now. I suppose I did it myself too.

SlightlyJaded · 14/12/2010 21:37

Ahh yes the programmes and tickets. I used to make these with my friend, and my mum now tells me that her heart would sink when she came to collect me and was presented with one of these. Apparantly her and my friends mum could scan the 'running order' and if there were more than two things either side of the interval (oh yes, there was), they would feign and emergency and we would have to pick one act to do (twas usually the 'finale' act). However, the down side of this meant lots of fast forwarding and rewinding of the tape machine to locate our exact starting point.

At least we are spared this pain nowadays.

kittykittykitty · 14/12/2010 21:38

I used to do this! Except my parents were wise - they set up a really old video camera, so no-one had to sit and watch. It would keep us amused for days and days as we watched and re-watched our own 'show'. I do believe it was the Backstreet Boys and 'Love Shine a Light'.

bitsyandbetty · 14/12/2010 21:39

My DD and her friend make the invitations and all that and organise the whole thing which is good from a learning point of view. Better to get off their buts rather than my DS who I have to push to do anything so that is a good element of it.

TheSleepFairy · 14/12/2010 21:42

I get dance routines & numerous versions of somewhere over the rainbow.
YANBU

panettoinydog · 14/12/2010 21:42

oh yes, it was tiresome watching never-ending puppet shows. I would be making that wind-up action with my arm and eventually drawing a finger across my throat.

pinguwings · 14/12/2010 21:42

A girl I looked when I was about 15 used to do this.

Only she would charge 50p and not accept pretend money. The Mum used to give me money to pay to see her daughter perform Confused
She was a spoilt little madam, but bet she's doing well now.

Hulababy · 14/12/2010 21:43

My 8y DD and her friends do plays too, and songs and dances. It doesn't bother me. It really can fire their imagination and it is better than them sat wanting to watch Tv or play on computer games.

Dd is really into her drama and performing so we get it a lot.

I just make sure they practise a lot and insist that I only have get to watch once it is a polished performance.

For those with primary age who do like it, Julia Donaldson does a good book of plays to help them along.

chocohohoholic · 14/12/2010 21:43

Glad I have a boy! Grin

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 14/12/2010 21:44

When does this "lovely" phase begin?
