to think £1100 is rediculous for car insurance.

Am 50 years old. Drive a ford fiesta. Have had no accidents in 22 years of driving. Had a window smashed in my car last year (no fault of mine).

Got my renewal notice in the post. Insurance gone up from £550 to £1100.

Thats extortionate, isn't it?

Have gone on line and managed to get a much better deal.

What are they playing at?

I sold my car because they wanted 800, the car only sold for 500! Ridiculous.

Car insurance only becomes 'cheap' once you built up max no claims bonus - which takes a few years and have no points on your license too.

NigellaPleaseComeDineWithMe · 15/12/2010 09:56

The high cost though makes people take the risk of driving with no insurance - then all us insured drivers have to pay more Angry. Anyone caught with no insurance should pay a hefty fine of at least 12 months insurance to a general insurers fund. That way if you are hit by an uninsured you can claim from there.

LaWeaselMys · 15/12/2010 09:59

Ours is way more than £1100 too, even after shopping around. [cries] and they charge extra because we couldn't afford it all up front and had to pay monthly.

It's because we're young and main driver Is DP, male and under 25.

I'm hoping it can't possibly ever cost us more than it does atm.

SantasKnickersOnMyHead · 15/12/2010 09:59

That sounds like a good idea Nigella!

SantasKnickersOnMyHead · 15/12/2010 10:00

Same here LaWeasel, think they charged something like £300/400 to pay monthly!

I pay £171.odd a month on mine.

That extra charge really pissed me off! Talk about kicking you when your down.

risingstar · 15/12/2010 10:16

nigella

if you are hit by an uninsured driver, you can claim direct from the MIB and not involve your insurers

NigellaPleaseComeDineWithMe · 15/12/2010 10:19

Men In Black?? Didn't know that - thought that insurance compamnies were claiming costs were rising due to uninsured costs as well as more cliams etc. Some insurers like Direct Line say you are covered - didn't know about others.

NigellaPleaseComeDineWithMe · 15/12/2010 10:19

Still uninsured drivers should have to be made to cough up like the rest of us!

FindingAManger · 15/12/2010 11:54

they don't want your business - go elsewhere!

TrillianAstra · 15/12/2010 11:56

They make the renewal quote high as a gamble that you won't bother to shop around. They may lose you but some other person may pay without looking and so then they get lots of money.
