A snow suit I ordered for very average sized Dd1 from H&M has just arrived, it could have fit me.

If that's a size 4-5yrs then my name's Gulliver!

Yes I agree M&S come up huge. My Dh has always followd the 50th percentile and had some trousers last year that were huge. They are still massive except for the length which is too short. The trousers jusy fall straight down with the waist done up.

Gap and Zara are a good fit though

scoobytoo · 13/12/2010 18:29

I meant DS

MardyQuickFollowThatStar · 13/12/2010 18:32

Apart from the bastards at the Disney store.

DD was always small for her age, but even on her the Disney princess dresses would be way too small. So some relative would give us a princess dress allegedly for a 3yo, which would actually be more suitable for a 2yo. Before you would know what was happening, she would rip of the labels, put it on, and it would last for about a week before she grew out of it.

I'm sure they did it on purpose. (Might be different now, as DD has grown up a bit and wouldn't be seen dead in a disney princess outfit)

Rowgtfc72 · 13/12/2010 18:36

My dd (nearly four) is on the 98th centile for height and weight. We buy 6-7 bottoms and nine-10 tops as she is long in the back.Sainsburys stuff seems to fit the best, its a bit more generous.Only issue is the stuff 3 yr olds want like charlie and lola doesnt come in age 9-10! May have a look at M&S when she stops having a growth spurt.

itsasmallworld · 13/12/2010 18:37

YABU - or I hope so, as my dc is tall for age, but is a 6yr old wearing 11yr old clothing, so I consoled myself with the fact that clothes come up small.

ragged · 13/12/2010 18:38

DD has stuff in the M&S skinny range and it comes up small on her relative to the age labels, the only clothes I've ever found that do. She's 9yo and wearing size 6-7 trousers, size 7-8 tops -- pretty typical for my lot and they don't look that small compared to their peers.

DS11yo now has leg length the same as me, but a tiny waist: 24"!!

itsasmallworld · 13/12/2010 18:40

thesecondcoming M&S have for reasons known to noone have missed out size 8-9. They have all the other ages but no 8-9.

hmmSleep · 13/12/2010 18:43

itsasmallworld, think I'm doing the same, but trying to convince myself we're not a bunch of munchkins in our house. I have just remembered that I still have to take up 'petit' sized trousers for myself.

This drives me mad. Next is closest sizing i can find, mine are both v tall and not skinny.

Can i hijack this thread and ask if anyone knows the difference in next sizes? They have age 4 and age 4-5. So i figured the age 4 is to fit a 4year old (same as 4-5) but the single sizes are much smaller! I asked in next and they didn't have a clue. So is age 4 to fit up to 4, or from 4? I am easily confused though....

montysorry · 13/12/2010 18:46

Yes. what the hell is going on with Next and their boys plus range or whatever it's called??? Ds, tall for his age so I thought these would eb great. But no, no longer just for fatter 7yr old boys which I rarely see TBH. The standard ones have adjustable waists and we always need to adjust them in. Fair enough, but why isn't the looser setting enough for the vast majority?

Surely there are more 7yr old lads who are taller than average than plumper than average?

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 13/12/2010 18:47

I have the opposite problem - I find they're too small.

I just ordered a new winter jacket for DS3 - he's 3 1/2 - I ordered an aged 5 one......thinking it would last him at least through this winter and next one.

It fits him perfectly now - and I think I may have to buy him a new one for next winter Xmas Hmm

hmmSleep · 13/12/2010 18:57

montysorry, I presume they think if your 7 year old is just tall, you'll be OK with the age 8 or 9 clothes, whereas if they're average height for a 7 year old, but a sturdy build, then you'll want the plus range?

Loosingmymind, no idea! I bet they're just made in different factories that label them differently.

with Next age 4 is more like age 3-4 rather than 4-5 (check the size guide online). I found the sizings to be ok until dd hit age 5 and then she had to get much bigger sizes than her age (for height rather than width). I find Asda small for her now and she needs an 8-9 or 9-10 in tops for them to fit.

Seona1973 · 13/12/2010 20:06

p.s. she is 7

lucykate · 13/12/2010 20:09

it totally depends on your child. dd is almost 9, and wears age 11-12.

yama · 13/12/2010 20:10

Opposite problem for us too.

My skinny 5 year old dd wears 6-7 clothes and at almost 4 months ds fits snugly into 6-9 months clothing.

dementedma · 13/12/2010 20:12

my 8 year old Ds is definitely on the chubby side and takes a few sizes up but we went to M&S on Saturday and bought him jeans which were marked for age 14!!! FFS!! he's big for his age but not that bloody big. i'll have to take the legs up but the waist fits!!

MrsSchadenfreude · 13/12/2010 20:15

DD2 is 9 and in age 12-14. Age 13 slim fit jeans from Gap. Fuck knows what she is going to wear next year.

goingroundthebend4 · 13/12/2010 20:16

all depends ddage 7 is tiny and very slim so wears 4-5 and skirts 3-4 as wont stay up.

Ds3 is a ticth to is 5 but still in 2-3 most shops m&s drown him

ds2 age is tall needs a 34" leg allow grow room but is max 28" waist and just cant find them so he has enough room around his arse for 2 of him

pigsinmud · 13/12/2010 20:20

Hmmsleep I think we have the same snowsuits! I ordered 2 red snowsuits in the sale. One for my 4.5 year old and one for my nearly 7 year old. They are huge! I went a size up as they are both quite tall and wear ages 5 and 7 in most shops.

So I got 5-6 and 7-8. My 12.5 year old ds managed to get into the 7-8 snowsuit!! Ok it was a squeeze, but he got it on. The 7-8 would fit my 10year old ds with no problem - he refused to try.

I've put mine in the loft for 3 years time.

Loosingmymind · 13/12/2010 20:45

Even the next size guide confused me though. It says if ur ds is this height order this size. My ds is 107cm. It says if 104cm order age 4, 110cm order age 5. Age 4 is too small though! Plus 104cm is 'average' height for 4 year old i think so tht would make them more like age 4-5? I don't think anyone knows whats what with the sizing!

Oh i also find new look tiny. Bought age 3 dress for DD and she cant get her arms in (she is 20mo).

ChoudeBruxelles · 13/12/2010 20:47

DS is always on clothes that are at least a year older than he is. he is tall but he's 4.5 and I've started buying 6-7 tops from most shops.

colditz · 13/12/2010 20:49

I find the sizing on boys' trousers to be ridiculously huge in most shops, with Adams being the exception, so I think that "Slim" varies hugely according to what your child's friends look like. Ds1 is not the thinnest of his friends, but his trousers dangle from his hip bones - then again, most of his peers are very active and walk to school every day.

Bingtata · 13/12/2010 20:52

loosingmymind - in Next:

2-3 = up to 98cm = Age 3
3-4 = up to 104cm = Age 4
4-5 = up to 110cm = Age 5
5-6 = up to 116cm = Age 6

Does that help?
