At my college they do get free bus passes between the age of 16-19, i'd be surprised if other councils don't offer the same.
They also have a £150 per term hardship grant, i bet that's available elsewhere too.

mamatomany · 14/12/2010 08:46

Yes completely agree with you. Those bus passes should be means tested along with free TV licenses etc

I meant there is a FreeBus. Totally free. I can send you the link if you think it would be helpful?

I think expat is right. The future looks extremely bleak for the UK for a very long time.

There isn't going to be any money coming through regardless of whether there should be or not. I wouldn't be surprised if IS was next to go so not going to school and claiming the dole will also not be an option.

Honestly, I think the UK is about to explode. I could feel the tension rising in London and it is one of the reasons I wanted out. We are very lucky we had the ability to leave.

I just can't see it going any other way TBH. It is so sad.

santasakura · 14/12/2010 09:22

but it's not inevitable is it? It's the result of the elitism existing in society that dictates that some people are entitled to ridiculous wages for (let's be honest) doing fuck all, and I'm talking abotu the bankers, the MEPs etc. They begrudge helping children. Just don't vote Tory next time and FGS nobody ever vote lib dems ever again

santasakura · 14/12/2010 09:24

every time someone says Britain's broke, I just LMAO. It's one of the richest countries in the entire world, but the problem it has, you see, is that the wealth is concentrated in the upper echelons of society. IT is not evenly distributed. That is the problem

Morloth · 14/12/2010 09:25

I think it is inevitable, but I hope I am wrong, what you just described is the set up for a revolution.

mamatomany · 14/12/2010 09:26

2018 they predict the recession will be over.
Might as well bed down for the time being and look at alternatives, going to college isn't the only way to gain qualifications and even getting the pieces of paper might have to wait but nobody can stop you gaining the knowledge and that's free.

santasakura · 14/12/2010 09:27

we will see the beginnings of the revolution this century

I know this thread was started tongue in cheek, but I am Shock at some of the vitriol on here.

Over-16s are NOT routinely entitled to free transport to school or college. In some places it seems they are, which is great, but certainly here (rural Hants) DD's free school transport will run out when she finishes Y11. Luckily we can afford to get here there (no buses here, so may have to get her a moped) but I'm sure many families simply can't.

goingroundthebend4 · 14/12/2010 09:50

mamatory

there is no fund available we asked about it was tld due to cuts its not available and the not sure how old your friend is but it is now compulsary to buy all your own equipment in the first term

pocket money whats that it his bus fair thats all it covers.

Like said maybe he sghould take leaf out his cousains book and sign on the dole he get £60 for doing nothing other than watching tv and playing computers. Then your be the first to complain .

Who be more employable a young adult ie my niece who has never worked and has no intention of and has no qualifcations .Or a young adult who is at collage and has qulaifcations

Yet you begrudge him bus fares yet he be the one who be paying taxes in the future but in the meantime your pay for my niece to do nothing

mamatomany · 14/12/2010 11:59

It strikes me some of you are getting a very rough deal and frankly need to move. We saw that the schools were over crowded where we lived when DD was a baby so we moved somewhere that they aren't.
And as a coincidence they seem to have a grant for everything here, you can probably guess where we are now but seriously you have to play the game to your best advantage.
Nobody but you has your DC's best interests at heart.

DurhamDurham · 14/12/2010 12:06

For all of the posters who keep saying better to get EMA and go to college rather then get "the dole", You cannot claim Job Seekers Allowance until you reach 18. Be interesting to see how many young people would stay on at college if the age of claiming it was reduced to 16.

pollywollyhadadollycalledmolly · 14/12/2010 12:35

I thought the whole point of EMA was to help for extra costs incurred while at college or uni.

Such as stationery, which isnt provided for you like it is in high school, the extra travel you will probably have to do, the lunches that you may have gotten for FREE in high school (alot of ppl get free school meals) and of course i thought a big part of it was so students didnt need to work or work as much so they had more time to study, which is what college and uni is all about surely? lol

So yes, i think people will miss it.

expatinscotland · 14/12/2010 12:53

And anyone who thinks university education will remain 'free' in Scotland is fooling themselves.

Our elections are next May. Westminster has slashed our budgets.

Stuff is already getting cut, like the schools.

pastyeaterneedsaSilentNight · 14/12/2010 12:55

Durhamdurham They will be on the dole eventually if they get no qualifications.EMA doesn't just get paid for A levels it gets paid for vocational courses as well. There are very few unskilled jobs about any more. If kids can't get to college to train for something they are highly unlikely to get jobs in the future.

mamatomany · 14/12/2010 13:22

College is a red herring, it's no good for vocational courses, to be an electrician or a plumber you have got to get your hands on the equipment, see the job done and then do it over and over again.
Sitting in a classroom learning V=IR is a waste of time for the majority and the ones that will become designers and supervisors will go to night school as they always have.
The money needs ploughing into apprenticeships and minimum wage has got to rise.
