still to be cycling at 7 months?

With dd1 I cycled to and from work up to the end of work, left at 38 weeks, she arrived a week later. Bump was quite discreet so nobody commented much.

This time round everyone keeps saying "Oh you're not still cycling are you? Are you sure that's wise?" Well given that my options for getting in and home are a) a 20 minute cycle in followed by 30 min cycle home, picking up DD1 from nursery on the way, or b) a 45 minute walk, bringing buggy to work, followed by 1 hour (or more) walk home with DD in my currently waddly state, or c) £25 a day on taxis, yes I think I am still cycling.

Is this totally unreasonable? I've got lights, helmet, luminous jacket, a route that involves several off road cycle paths, it's not like I'm going down the side of the M11.

I was mountain biking off road (mountainsides rather thab bridleways) at 7 months. Cheered me up no end after months of hyperemisis.

WidowWadman · 13/12/2010 22:30

If you feel comfortable doing it, then do it. I stopped cycling fairly early on in first pregnancy, but mostly because I was once hit by a car through no fault of my own on the way to work before I was pregnant. Thankfully no injuries, but the thought "What if it happens again?" didn't leave my head. Guess if it hadn't been for that I wouldn't have given up that early.

No real option/time for cycling this time round (30 rather than 3 mile commute now), so don't have to worry about it.

Wouldn't judge anyone who continues cycling, it's personal choice.

tethersjinglebellend · 13/12/2010 22:34

Depends.

If your commute is through the centre of London, then YABU.

Leafy country lanes, YANBU.

Keep going, imagine they're a toddler about to gointo meltdon and go distraction change the conversation to the weather, Christmas or funny shaped cloud.

WARNING:not scientifically proven:You know in your heart that being generally fit hopefully makes the birth a lot easier.

yanbu, i wish i didn't stop my exercising when pregnant as 18 month on and i still get get back into it.

but could i put an 18 month old onto a bike, is it safe

tomhardyismydh · 13/12/2010 23:02

good on you op, I gave up when I was pregnant, I was over cautious to do so would carry on cycling with another pg Im sure. I expect it aids labour.

18mnth old on a bike seat is fine.

I want one of those dutch bikes, I have a trailgator but its a pain in the backside and does not solve the shopping problem.

NorthernLurker · 13/12/2010 23:47

tethers - why do you think urban cycling is less safe than rural cycling? People go a lot faster on rural roads, visibility is often less, drivers don't expect a cyclist to be around the next bend and street lighting and markings are poorer.

otchayaniye · 14/12/2010 07:59

I rode a sportsbike for about half my pregnancy (bump got in the way of the tank eventually) and people were always asking me 'how I could even consider it'.

We have a cristiania trike with a wooden box on the front. Cristianiabikes.com i cant find the website for the company in covent garden. It is brilliant and has lasted years. You can fit a hamax type seat on the back as well for an extra child! When ds2 was little we fixed an old car seat into it for a while until he could sit on the bench seat.

Also worth looking at is the Taga for a newborn but this will only carry one child. Ours comes from a company called kids and family cycles in ?dorset. They also do a trailer style pod that you could get both in that you can turn into a buggy.

I mountain biked on single track off road and red-black trail centres until the day before I went into labour. DD fine, I was saine and healthy and labour was a breeze as I stayed fit.

I say if you are carefull keep it up.
