I left my EBF 5 wk old for the first time today, my mother took her. I left a fridge full of EBM. When i got home she told me that she gave her some water in the bottle - cooled boiled water - as she was still hungry after a feed (EBM and formula available). DD had a big puke up this evening. I googled and it seems that babies shouldn't have water until 6 mths, I don't know what possessed her.

My mother has been absolutely brilliant since I had DD, fantastic support, and today went really well for her. I don't know whether to say anything or not. I feel like I might hurt her feelings, and make her reluctant to mind DD again, but I don't know would it be worse to say it just before she minds her again. And, I don't know am I being a bit precious. I can get stressed at times when it comes to DD and I have already let fly at my poor mother a few times over minor things, I feel terrible afterwards. AIBU to say anything, would I be better to stay schtum?

Udderly dont know if this is her first grandchild or not but remember even grandparents get nervous. Ive been there and to be honest cant remember what I did.
If its also her first time of babysitting then this could account for things too.

In the olden days we were told to give babies cooled boiled water rather than keep topping up with regular formula .... to save them becoming podgie (dont know the PC word for this).

Perhaps your baby had just not been winded properly and this caused the sickness.

I think its best not to say anything this time but next time make sure all is explained to her in a nice way so that she doesnt feel bad. No one is perfect .. and baby is fine.

Good Luck.

My (v. aged) mum did this with DS. No harm done. Don't make a big deal - it was standard medical advice back in the day - especially as most babies were FF. Most unlikely to have caused a big puke. Babies will usually just pee out the extra water.

We survived! My father's generation were brought up on all sorts of crap - like a tot of whisky in the bottle to help with teething, condensed milk/crushed up Farley's Rusks added to formula etc.

Just let her know for next time that EBM will provide all DDs needs.

you can overfeed a baby with EBM as it's the delivery that's the problem. You can look up kellymom and 'how to bottle feed the breast fed' for tips to ensure overfeeding doesn't occur. That said if it's the odd occasion here and there as opposed to when you go back to work full time, it's not something I would worry about.

FF do have occasion to need water, but under certain circumstances, BF babies shouldn't. No biggie though, as others have said, just try to say in a nice way it's not needed as it's just lie and say it's because it's EBM.
