to think that Wuthering Heights is crap...

and that Emily Bronte was the least talented of the Bronte sisters?

'Jane Eyre' and 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' were both miles better.

I eventually got past the first 3 chapters of WH, which were tedious, and got on to the main bit. They are all a bunch of hysterics. Heathcliffe is in no way a romantic hero, he's completely abusive. I could not bring myself to care about any of the characters. I didn't finish it.

AIBU to not know why so many people think it's one of the best books ever? If there's something there, I've completely missed it.

Nope YANBU. I and friends agree. Is it any wonder that its the favourite book of the girl in Twilight (actually Edwards attitude to that book is the best thing about him).

Can you tell I'm a Mum who is desperately hoping that her daughter has got bored and will give up reading those trashy books!

Admittedly some of Charlottes other books get a bit tedious. Tenant of Wildfell Hall is amazing, and I found it surprisingly modern in attitude when I read it (I can imagine Anne posting replies in relationships here).

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 11/12/2010 22:47

Ohhhh, YANBU! A collection of hateful, self-obsessed people being utterly vile to each other, with some rather nice scenery in the background.

I read it when I was a teenager because I was told it was romantic. I was baffled by the thought that anyone could find either Heathcliff or Cathy attractive. Read it again at uni because I was told it was brilliantly structured and a masterpiece of novelistic narrative. A bit like unwrapping a really disappointing present - the packaging was pretty cool, but I still hated the contents.

Since we now know that Bella Mary Sue Swann thinks it's brilliant, I feel justified in never reading it again.

gapbear · 11/12/2010 22:52

The song is ace though. Totally bonkers conkers, but ace all the same.

wrinklyraisin · 11/12/2010 22:55

Totally agree.

Although shamefully I have revelled in the tragedy of WH. Mainly due to Kate Bush I will admit.

MitchyInge · 11/12/2010 22:55

There is something sexually wrong with you

TheCrackFox · 11/12/2010 22:57

YAQNBU - I was forced to rad it at school ( I got an A+ thanks) and I thought the whole "love" story was a bunch of self absorbed nonsense.

As an aside it always made me chuckle when Gordon Brown was compared with Heathcliff. I could never understand how that was, in anyway, meant to be a compliment.

blushington · 11/12/2010 22:58

Crack, he compared HIMSELF with Heathcliffe! I don't think he's read the book. He could maybe get away with Mr Rochester though

SleightiesChick · 11/12/2010 22:59

YANBU. It is actually good but not as good as it's made out to be IMO. Jane Eyre is miles better and I also really like Villette.

BelligerentGhoul · 11/12/2010 23:02

YANBU - it is very irritating indeed.

I like The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall and the second half of Jane Eyre - the first half of Jane Eyre makes Withering Heights look almost good!

Gordon Brown = Rochester - love it!

YA sooooo NBU. A bunch of rude selfish non-empathetic people (bordering on sociopathic in the case of Heathcliff IMO) being horrible to each other.

Although it does contain ONE line that I love: "he's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same"

wigglesrock · 11/12/2010 23:10

YANBU, I think its really overated and most of the characters are really unsympathetic. Never mind wandering on the moors, I'll throw you onto them myself, stop your lunancy over a man who treats you badly.

But I love Jane Eyre.

Iwasthefourthwiseman · 11/12/2010 23:25

Yanbu hated it, vile characters, not at all romantic.

Biscuitscoco · 11/12/2010 23:28

YABVU. It is a wonderful book.

EvilTwinsAteRudolph · 11/12/2010 23:29

YABU. Wuthering Heights is fabulous. Given the lifestyle of Emily B and her sisters, it's amazing she managed to conjure up such passion.

I did for A Level too (got an A+ too) and have loved it ever since.

Jane Eyre is good too, but she doesn't half ruin the ending at the beginning Xmas Grin

By the way I don't think it is necessary to give your A level result in order to comment on a book!

chippy47 · 11/12/2010 23:31

Been watching Peep Show by any chance?

wrinklyraisin · 11/12/2010 23:32

Thinking more about it (and blocking out Kate B) I do think it's a brilliant early example of the harsh side of love. Heathcliffe was a nasty piece of work. Yet I would have fallen for him. Emily was ahead of her time in a way, to write about abusive yet passionate relationships?

FrustratedHippy · 11/12/2010 23:33

YABU i love it.... we don't always fall in love with the nice guys.
It's a book of passion

blushington · 11/12/2010 23:34

I found it ineffective because there was NOTHING attractive about Heathcliffe at all, so it didn't make sense for anyone to fall for him. Whereas with Arthur Huntingdon in The Tenant you could see why she married him, but could also see the warning signs that he was going to be horrible.

DuelingFanio · 11/12/2010 23:35

I disagree that Jane Eyre is better.

TheCrackFox · 11/12/2010 23:36

"Biscuitscoco" -I didn't do A levels (Scottish) and it was a joke .

FrustratedHippy · 11/12/2010 23:37

me too duelling
Jane Eyre
