to expect breasts to be the same size?

Well, now I have your attention I am afraid I am talking about chicken breasts.

Is it too much to expect that 2 chicken breast when sold in a pack together should be at least a roughly similar size? I was planning on stuffing mine, but when I opened the package one looked like it belonged to a partridge and the other to a turkey. How bloody hard is it to package the breast of the same chicken? Plus they also do the same chicken in stripes and chunks for stir frying so you would think that they could use the odd sized ones for that and use the roughly similar sized ones for the 2 packs. And they make the label too big so you can't easily check. I was SURE I had picked up ones that were similar. It really pisses me off.

Apologies if IABU for the phrasing of the title. Xmas Wink

I have wonky boobs, perhaps chickens do too? YABU Xmas Wink

On the same subject, when you buy a pack with 2 steaks in there's always one smaller than the other. It's the equivalent of a pint of bitter and a white wine spritzer for the lady in the steak world!

You could go to the butchers and pick out breasts individually instead of buying from supermarkets.

greenbananas · 10/12/2010 18:54

They are always different sizes. I agree that it is very annoying. If supermarkets guaranteeed that they were similar sizes, it would probably make the breasts more expensive (extra processing costs?)

Here's my solution: I buy vast amounts in bulk at cheapo prices from the local butcher then freeze them in individual bags. When I want to cook some, I pick similar sizes at that stage.

But YANBU.

A large one for Daddy and a little one for Mummy.

rocketleaf · 10/12/2010 18:59

I do the buthcer/freezer thing quite often but have run out and sometimes the supermarket is the only option (late night shopping when butchers is shut)

My point is that surely they KNOW you want to cook them as individual breasts, otherwise you'd buy chunks/strips. I don't mind a bit of difference in size but this was ridiculous. headfairy, if they came from the same chook it would have been one seriously deformed freak. (and that is speaking as someone who is also a bit wonky in that department)

Ha ha. Thought this was a breastfeeding thread! I have lots to say on wonkiness in that topic unfortunately.

rocketleaf · 10/12/2010 19:00

Lynli, i would have been starving! :o Plus there is the cooking factor here, little one would be torched for big one to be cooked through.

I'm so relieved. I was quite concerned when I read the title of this thread

greenbananas · 10/12/2010 19:12

rocketleaf, you are so right about the cooking times. It is just silly to package such different sizes together!

parakeet · 10/12/2010 19:16

Try buying chicken legs and thighs instead - much tastier
