to be furious at being called a thief in a supermarket

Went to supermarket ( not sure of I can actually name the shop on a forum)and bought a whole lot of stuff including two bath mats.

After I paid a took a look at the receipt to check that
a my vouchers had been taken off
b that the 3 for 2 offer on the make up I bought was shown

I went to walk out of the door and got stopped by security, who asked to check my receipt - seems that I was only charged for one bathmat now they were only about 6 quid each and I had spent over a hundred quid and I really hadnt noticed

I was accused in public of knowing that I had only been charged for one as I has been observed checking my receipt.

Ended up having a huge row with the guard, he wanted to take me into a back room and I refused telling him I wanted the police called, it was stalemate for 10 minutes until the store manager came over and luckily took my side and took me to a till to pay for the other mat.

I really wish I could say I was never going to the store again, but its the only one near me in Ryde, the others are in Newport which is a bugger to get to as I dont drive

I really am very angry about this - all they needed to do was to say there was a mistake and would I pay the extra - what ever happened to innocent until proven guiltyAngry

My Mother had something similar happen to her, in that a jumped up power tripping jobsworth of a security guard stopped & demanded to search her bags in full view of everyone, she is disabled & was absolutely horrified to be singled out in that way, they are meant by law to be discreet Hmm

Go TO THE VERY TOP & COMPLAIN COMPLAIN COMPLAIN!!!

I got hold of the company directors name & contact via the internet, & e-mailed him directly with my complaint over how my Mum was treat - he drove over 150miles to apologise in person, took her a huge bouquet of flowers, & re assured hr it would never happen again & the guard was hauled into the office & disciplined - she was also given shopping vouchers to make sure she went back to the store - though it took her quite a while to go spend them, as she was still so embarassed :(

Was the mat at the bottom of the trolley or something ?Hmm

It just sounds rather odd that they actually accurately determined what you genuinely hadn't paid for.

pigletmania · 10/12/2010 21:05

outrageous, its their cock up not yours. If the cashier made a mistake she should have called you back or got the security guard to alert you about her mistake so you can rectify it. They dont have a leg to stand on, just because you are reading the receipt does nto mean you understand necessarily what is on it, the items can abbreviated.

BangingNoise · 10/12/2010 21:05

I thought that chain of stores was fairly easy to half inch from Wink

Islandlady · 10/12/2010 21:08

Sorry all thanks for your answers

I am not sure how she got the SG as he wasnt the one who was sitting by the CCTV desk which is on the front maybe a roving one

I have calmed down a bit now.

Absolutely ridiculous! The OP was bad enough but the follow-up explanation that the cashier is the one who notified the security guard (of HER error) is insanity. On top of that, him accusing you of knowing because he saw you checking your receipt is complete BS- I almost always check my receipt before leaving, but I'm not itemising everything as I go, I'm usually just checking that I received a specific discount. I'm certainly not checking every item on the list (and I'm especially not checking for items which are NOT on the list).

I know you've calmed down but you should considered writing a letter. Both the cashier and the SG need a bit of training if that's how they think that sort of situation should be handled.

I'd be absolutely furious (and embarassed too), and would certainly follow it up with the Al Fresco Wink HO.

How awful for you

I used to work in (cough) "the orange one"... I was on the checkouts day in, day out. I dont understand how the security guard was alerted so quickly and why on earth would they accuse you of shop lifting if the girl admitted it was her fault.

I must admit, when I forgot to charge someone for something (which didnt happen often honest lol), I just let them have it. My mistake and it was less hassle Smile

Oh and you so need to complain and take this further. Ive seen some shocking things in my time and people dont complain about anything. Some supermarkets treat people (customers and staff) in an appalling way.

I used to LOVE my job and was sad to leave but never again!
