that he should get to read more than three pages of his book.
He doesn't sound out and is very fluent (reads a bit too quickly and needs to slow down) so that must take about 3 mins max.

I asked him if the person he read with asked any questions about the story and he said no (he's usually fairly reliable so I imagine that's true).

Yellowkiwi - as I said below he has done guided reading once this term. He is not doing much in class at his level given he is a good year + ahead of the next children in reading level. Not saying he isn't doing anything at all reading wise but not a lot relevant for his next steps.

Hi greenbananas.
I couldn't agree more, if I had the time it would be a lovely thing to do. In the situation you describe however, the teacher was still teaching the class. You were an aditional adult. If all classes were given an additional adult to hear readers it would be fab! Unfortunately given the current climate it is more likely that TA numbers will be reduced rather than added to over the coming years.
As an aside, children that are not heard read at home are easily identified and accomodated with the intervention strategies mentioned earlier.

Here is a link to the various reading foci that teachers have to assess, moving far beyond simple decoding skills and straight retrieval of information from the text. If your child is way ahead it may be that he is being extended in these ways. Are you able to go in to chat to your child's teacher about your concerns?
