To want to burn down the Tax Credits buliding in Birmingham and all those in it?

carocaro · 09/12/2010 17:29

The tossers at Tax Credits have just totally denied that I had ever made any phone calls to the with my new bank account details.

They have paid my £190 into an old bank account which has been closed and which we can't get back because the account was in arrears and any money that goes into account is kept and they won't give it back.

So I do not have any money to pay bills or buy food. And DH's JSA cheque has not turned up either.

Oh and I won't qualify for an emergency payment as they have no record of me every telling them of the new bank details which I have done twice by telephone. I even have some forms that they requested on my behalf after one of those phone calls.

I can write to them apparently to complain.

I'm sure YANBU but remember that guy who was recently convicted of some crime or other for tweeting a joke about blowing up an airport because of flight delays?

You may want to rethink your wording and get this deleted unless you fancy porridge for Christmas!

Gogopops · 09/12/2010 17:46

If your old bank account was in arrears I'm surprised you have been allowed to open another one. I assume you spent the 'arrears' money on something - the bank only want to be repaid!!

AlpinePony · 09/12/2010 17:49

Did you phone the tax credits people on your mobile? If yes, go to your online bill and print this out when you go and ask about an emergency payment.

spikeycow · 09/12/2010 17:56

You owe a bank money!! Shock In the next hour this will be Mumsnet at its worst Grin

I had previuosly had no problems with them doing everythign by phone. They cancelled my payments in August stating I hadn't given them the correct info. When I phoned they denied that I had phoned and given them my new amounts. I knew they had made a mistake said I would dispute that I hadn't phoned, and oh BTW why have you changed my name on my account to one I have never used with you

They sorted my problem out immediately as I reckoned they knew the fault was with them

taintedsnow · 09/12/2010 18:02

They can't take 'benefit' money to cover arrears though can they? You might want to contact them and tell them where the money came from.

carocaro · 09/12/2010 18:04

Good point Jeely!

And yes Gogopops, tell that to DH's employers who went belly up and owe hime 2 months salary. And yes we have opened another account, just a cashcard one. Thanks for your kind helpful words, one strike and your out and to be looked on like scum - nice.

The veins in my neck and head have just stopped wildy pulsating, DH has gone out for a run as he is LIVID.

I used the landline, so should be able to see it on the next bill, unless I can look online, am off to investigate

Look at the positive, at least some of your debt had been paid.

HalfTermHero · 09/12/2010 18:08

Agree that it is rather churlish of you to begrudge the bank money it is owed. Your debt is now smaller so CTC have done you a favour, really.

they are such incompetent twats. i feel for you. have had similar dealings. Angry dont let it go, just keep on and on at them. it sometimes works. :(

purpleturtle · 09/12/2010 18:11

Actually, taintedsnow's point may be worth looking into. I don't know whether Tax Credits are treated as Benefits, in this instance, but if they are, you should be able to get them back. But it may not be a speedy process.

I came across that little gem on a thread recently - if I can find it, I'll put on a link.

purpleturtle · 09/12/2010 18:13

Found it much more easily than I expected. It's stuff about inalienable benefits - but as I say, I don't know whether it will apply to Tax Credits.

Take a look here

colditz · 09/12/2010 18:15

I'm sure that the knowledge that the bankers have been repaid £180 will fill the op's belly for her this week, and put gas in her meter, and buy gloves fr her chldren.

superv1xen · 09/12/2010 18:16

you took the words out of my mouth colditz

mamatomany · 09/12/2010 18:17

All the calls are recorded every one of them so ask them to listen through, they won't of course and tbh you should put everything in writing in triplicate.

spikeycow · 09/12/2010 18:18

What colditz said

rastaClaus · 09/12/2010 18:18

YANBU.

In the past we've had nothing but problems with them due to sheer incompetence on their behalf. I've never come across such useless, clueless, crap, incompetent people in all my life.

You can request transcripts or call recordings of past phone calls you've had with them. You have to apply to a certain address (not the tax credit office) to get them.

Good luck, been there myself and I know how infuriating they are and how soul destroying it feels.

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 09/12/2010 18:21

all the people saying "well, you did owe the bank money, at least some of its been paid" have obviously never genuinely lived from day to day, penny to penny!

op, thats shit, i feel your pain. do you qualify for a crisis loan [[http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/On_a_low_income/DG_10018856 agreed a repayment scheme with the bank? they might be able to agree something.

wewishyouamerrylissiemas · 09/12/2010 18:21

oops

Tiredmumno1 · 09/12/2010 18:22

Another that agrees with colditz

taintedsnow · 09/12/2010 18:23

Yes purpleturtle, I wasn't sure if they were counted or not, but the bank might refund it anyway (because it's state money etc). Either way, it's worth a shot, eh?

I would definitely contact them and ask.

taintedsnow · 09/12/2010 18:24

I also agree with colditz btw. Can't believe people can be so heartless as to be thinking of the banks before someone who could be desperate for that money.

granhands · 09/12/2010 18:25

They are utterly dreadful, when my ex walked out it took about six months to get it sorted.

Then after a few weeks they said they had got the ammount wrong and wanted money back: I earn a salary, the same money every month.

In the end I stopped claiming it and when questioned I told them I would rather be destitute than take money from them.

They told me my attitude was "unhelpful", LOLOLOL.

It was better for me to go without than to worry that I would have to keep paying them back.

My mum was asked to pay back more than she actually received!

Absolutely shocking.
