to expect boots to last a season?

I know we've had a hard winter, snow and ice and stuff. But I spent £50 on dd's boots from Jones the Boot Makers. They're leather, well constructed (on the surface) and seemed eminently practical. They were waterproofed with specially bought waterproofer. They've been dried out every night they've been worn.

They were bought in September, have been worn frequently, but not every day as dd is allowed to wear Converse for school and has done so whenever the weather's dry...but the zips gone on one boot. It's been sticky for a month or more, but I told her to live with it. Now it's broken completely.

I'm not sure whether I should write this off to experience and not buy from them again or take the boots back.

It's not like I bought them from Jones the Fudgemakers, who are great at making fudge, but crap at making boots. I bought them from Jones the Bootmakers....surely they should be able to guarantee a full seasons wear on a kids boot????

AIBU to take them back or am I within my rights???

I would take them back and see what they say. I would expect them to repair the boots.

Me too I agree, although the laws are vague, something like must be suitable for use for a reasonable length of time, depends what they deem reasonable.
I definitely think they should do something though, it's only a matter of 10 - 14 weeks really and thats not reasonable to me

I bought some boots (from Schuh) at the end of August. The heels fell off them in November and I hadn't worn them that often (maybe 10-15 times). I took them back with a credit card statement as proof of purchase.

I was refunded straight away, in full. No fuss, no messing.

So yes, take them back.

I would take them back to Jones The Bootmakers. Apparently they won the Which magazine 'Best Retailer' award recently so maybe you could quote that to them!!

Personally, I've always found them extremely helpful so don't worry about going in there.

Thanks for the feedback. You've given me the confidence to take these back. I'm sure I can dig out the receipt from somewhere, then back they go!!! The quote about them being the 'Best Retailer' is worth it's weight. Thanks for that Gogopops. I'll update once I've taken them back. Thank you :)

Take them back. If you need a confidence boost, ring consumer direct and ask for advice before you go. Quote the "Sale of Goods Act 1979" - perhaps google that first.

Thank you.....Sale of Goods Act being googled as we speak. I'm not sure whether the threat of blabbing on Mumsnet might scare them more than the law though Grin.

Its how they deal with it we care about, not that the boots fell apart. Tell them that Wink

Came home today with a new pair of boots :)

They said they usually fix broken zips, when it happens, but they're mid sale at the moment, so they were too busy to do that.

Hurrah! They've only got to last another couple of months and it'll all be good.
