To think you must be really up yourself to send Christmas cards which are actually photos of yourselves?

Photos of your kids (cute or otherwise) I can just about stomach but close up photos of Parents plus DCs is just sick worthy. Looks at us, aren't we just gorgeous?

Or am I just a miserable old cow?

I think it is hilarious, but i doubt people do it for that reason. I have a friend who has large posters of herself all over the flat. I find that a bit off putting TBH

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/12/2010 16:10

I normally take the piss out of this kind of stuff, but I think cards like this are really nice.

You can chortle at and mock their hairstyles and shoes and everything.

sethstarkaddersmum · 09/12/2010 16:13

I like it, I'd much rather have pics of my friends than some random robin, twee Santa or irrelevant snow scene (though those aren't quite so irrelevant this year I suppose).

how ridiculous to sneer or be snobby when it's just a different tradition.

I agree - my US relatives are always posting photos of themselves. Never ask after us - just send photo after photo. Really pisses me off.

SeaTrek · 09/12/2010 16:37

I only get these from my American friends. I have about five who send me cards each year and they ALL have photos, even if it is just a little pic of their children although the norm is a family shot.

I've never had one from any of my UK friends. I would be slightly surprised but I think I would like it!

cheapskatemum · 09/12/2010 16:47

2 of my friends stage their DCs in a Christmas-themed picture, eldest DS twiddles about on PC, prints them off, they mount them on card, write them & send them to friends. I love receiving them. Oddly, these are 2 friends who have never met each other & both have 4 DCs, as have I.

I have received cards before with pictures on and between close friends or family they can be very meaningful. I would never dream of sending one to anyone other than my fiancee though as I dont think anyone else would particularly want a picture of me :o

I had to chuckle a couple of years ago. I met my now fiancee just after splitting up with a long term boyfriend. Unfortunately my fiancee's ex girfriend had been a friend of mine years before, the friendship ended as I always felt she was jealous of me, for whatever reason (I had never met my fiancee as she wasnt with him at the time).

She found out about me and my fiancee being together and instantly reacted badly. She then went and found my ex (via facebook) and started a relationship with him. So far, so weird! I was pleased that they got together as I thought it would get him off my back.

She had been close friends with my fiancees mother who elected to stay in touch with her. I had no problem with any of this but my ex and his new partner seemed to go to great lengths to advertise how deliriously happy they were together.

We went to visit my fiancees mother at christmas to find a full colour christmas card with a picture of our exes in all their glory on the front :). I found this hilarious and love the fact that we annoy them so much they go to all this effort to try and get at us :). I still think of it and smile so I suppose the card did serve its purpose of making an impression on me albeit not in the way they intended!

PartridgeinaPeartree · 09/12/2010 17:52

I agree with OP on close-ups of adults.

Reminds me of a card I received from some elderly relatives one year which contained.......wait for it.......yup, a picture of myself at age 16 with gappy teeth, a curtain fringe and a lime green jumper Shock

Really big it was, think my mum must have been sending them my school photo's at the time.

Thing is as well I was 26 by the time I received that picture in the card. Would still love to know what their thinking was behind the idea. Would have preferred a pic of them tbh!

LadyInaManger · 09/12/2010 18:10

We have never done it before but this year we did do the traditional "Holiday Card" with a photo of the 3 of us playing in the snow with 3 snowmen/women dressed like each of us - not cutesy flattering pic's all contrived though (unless red noses and cheeks and bobble hats & chunky parka's are flattering) and we have received some similar ones back but the more contrived shot of the family around their Xmas tree. Thing is i really look forward to getting the picture cards as i compare them to the ones i received the year before (i keep the photo ones - how sad am i)

Beacuse it's not the norm for us to send holiday cards i know they will be well received especially as they are only going to family and friends who would be interested not neighbours we see every day etc.

sims2fan · 09/12/2010 19:12

I'm sending cards this year with a picture of my cat fressed in a santa outfit. I think it's funny! Blush

sims2fan · 09/12/2010 19:12

or even, dressed*

PressureDrop · 09/12/2010 19:13

Don't do it personally, but don't mind when people do. Think it's quite sweet.

No round robins, though, please.

Asteria · 09/12/2010 19:26

Agree with pressuredrop they are sweet, if tastefully done - mummy, daddy, Tarquin, Arabella and the family dog artfully placed in front of their ENORMOUS house, a la Gainsbrough, is a bit "look how well we have done". But an informal photo can be lovely. A three page smug round robin is not acceptable either - if they don't know what you have been up to since last year's catalogue of success, then why are you still sending them Chirstmas cards??
