planning, catching up with risk assessments,
changing displays, ...... all the things teachers say they spend all holidays and weekend doing. Or is there suddenly nothing to be done?!!
BTW my OH is a teacher so I know bugger all goes on in hols or after 4 o'clock each day.

Lotster · 08/12/2010 18:41

Could be any number of admin, planning or catching-up related things...

Why are you cross - are you a teacher?

scarletbegonia · 08/12/2010 18:42

But if the teachers can get there why can't the pupils ?

SauvignonBlanche · 08/12/2010 18:43

To do some work - as they are paid to do. Hmm

Yulephemia · 08/12/2010 18:45

Well I can't get to the school where I am working, so I have been told to go to my local school. With no pupils. What am I going to do there? Also I am on supply and the other class teacher doesn't have to come in, as she doesn't live in the county, so even if I could get to my school I'd have nothing to do as she is responsible for planning, etc. and I just do what I'm told.
Also if it's not safe for the kids to travel, why is it deemed safe for staff?

Planning for next term, evaluations of this terms plans, updating assessment folders, any outstanding CPD for this term, using your Glow account to access LTS and CfE developments (if you are in Scotland), making resources, marking work, changing wall displays, having departmental meetings, using the day for staff training...

JoBettany · 08/12/2010 18:48

X post. CPD and Glow suggestions still stand. There's lots that can be done online.

mumbar · 08/12/2010 18:48

make the site safe, organisation, many will have left there folders etc there with planning not realising they would be off for however long and everythiong needs to be sorted, planned etc.

Not this time but last time it snowed we did this for a day as the pupil entrance wasn't safe but we went in a different way, unaccessible to our pupils in wheelchairs and organised everything for the pupils safe return. BTW I'm not a teacher but do work in a school.

cumfy · 08/12/2010 18:53

AngryHmm

Are they paying you ?

I'm sure there's loads they can find for you: :o

Yulephemia · 08/12/2010 18:53

If I was an actual teacher I would be happy to do all that stuff. But I'm on short-term supply two days a week in two different classes so I don't have any of those responsibilities. I also don't have a GLOW login as supply have to get one from each school they work in, and it's not worth it if you're short-term.
Ach well, it's a day's pay. It's the idea of it not being OK for pupils to come (most walk) but it's OK for staff that's annoyed me.

Yulephemia you are being paid!!!

The Education Authority you do supply for are not paying you to stay at home and, as a grown woman, you would surely find the weather conditions easier to negotiate than a primary school child.

If you don't want to work there are plenty of unemployed NQTs from last year who would value the opportunity to do even two days supply at two different schools.

I know you didn't ask but YABU.

atswimtwolengths · 08/12/2010 19:31

They are paying you to do nothing and you are complaining?

Yulephemia · 08/12/2010 19:45

Happier now I just have to go to local school - the original plan was over an hour's walk to school, which WAS insane! The schools have been closed all week; I just don't understand asking teachers to travel on day 4 of the closure when they haven't had to all week.
I'm desperate to work, I'm just not happy to be asked to travel against police advice to do it. I also don't see the point in turning up at the local school, when I know the HT there won't want our help as she'll only want her own staff's hands on anything!
According to the McCrone Agreement we're supposed to be able to work from home in these circumstances, so I just don't get this farce of reporting to a school. If there were pupils due in, I would be delighted to get in there and teach, but that's not the case.
Anyway, it's a farce I'm getting paid for so I will shut up. Xmas Grin This moan has only partially been about me, it's the system that seems daft to me.

Maybe the teachers are all going to be shovelling snow Grin.

Lucyinthepie · 08/12/2010 19:49

I'm sure they'll find something for the teachers to do.
I hate to say this, but on Tuesday it looked as if all the staff at our local special school were out digging the ice off the car park and barrowing it away. Today the school was open for pupils. Take yer shovel Yulephemia. Grin
