to want to move to a nice, rural Shropshire village?

I live in the North West, always have done (apart from a few years serving in the forces). I'm proud of my northern roots.

I've had enough. The NW is so built up, town after city after town. I just want some peace, somewhere nice for my DD (4 months) to grow up. Somewhere quiet, serene, picturesque. I walk the dog every day, dodging broken bottles, rubbish strewn all over the place, dogshite on the pavements, grafitti on the walls. Every weekend I'm subjected to hearing arguments and drunken fights going on in the street all night. The traffic. Argh, I could go on.

AIBU to just want to find myself a nice village in Shropshire, not too far away from the motorway to allow me to continue work, but off the beaten track to avoid bus after bus after lorry after bulldozer? Somewhere on the edge of rolling countryside. Somewhere with nice quaint little stone cottages and farm buildings, a couple of village pubs, a shop, a nice local school.... am I living in a dreamworld?? I have a good friend who lives in a beautiful village like this down in Northants. That's too far, but I struggle to find something similar round here.

Sorry, I've just had enough. I must be getting old!!!!!

YABVU - the north west is great! There are lots of lovely rural areas, you can get to the Lake District, Peak District and Pennines in an hour. No need to move to Shropshire (wherever that is)

Not at all :) We moved from the NW to a nice, rural Shropshire village, almost 8 years ago and it's the best thing we've ever done :)

Fair enough, we moved to a slightly smaller house and our town isn't amazing when you want to do xmas shopping or whatever, but it's in no way a nightmare. Everyone is much friendlier than where we came from and there's a much slower, quieter pace of life.

We're only 30 minutes from our old place as well, so handy for visiting family etc. Go for it, you won't look back :)

roadkillbunny - Oxfordshire is lovely, I lived there for 30 years, moved away for study and have been trying to get back ever since!. Do you live in Hook Norton?

northernrock · 06/01/2011 18:20

Yeah, Oxfordshire is nice-but there I think you have a slightly lesser proportion of, er, Daily Mail types. Grin

Shropshire...I dunno, but I reckon after the Manchester area it might feel really insular.

Someone earlier mentioned Nantwich(Cheshire) For the Love of God, don't do that! It's like purgatory!

The Pennines somewhere? Heckmondwike? Full of hippies though but good transport links and stuff going on.

I live in Shropshire-house prices are reasonable but none of the nice places is near a motorway. The only m-way is the M54 and that is a longish trip from M6 and not really handy for the prettier villages-Brosely is quite nice I suppose but a bit small townish......

I do live in a little village and love it [grins] but:

...not too far away from the motorway...

we are about 10 mins of rural road - may as well be 100 miles if it snows/gets slightly icy as no one grits and you need to be able to stop on single track roads. We had no post for nearly 2 weeks this year!

...to avoid bus after bus after lorry after bulldozer...

we get tractor after tractor, starting at dawn

...nice quaint little stone cottages...

heated by oil at a ludicrous price (IF you can get it) so actually unheated

...and farm buildings...

sittign in amongst the septic tank sludge [grins]

...a couple of village pubs...

ours closed last week

...a shop...

ours closed last year - half an hour to nearest supermarket (we all have very big freezers around here :))

...a nice local school....

depends on what you are after - kids tend to be well behaved but the attitudes of the parents (and some staff) are terrible (racist, sexist, homophobic - you name it and it will be alibe adnb well in English villages)

as I said I love it but only because I do not mind the disadvantages too much.

I would vote for Shropshire! Beautiful county. Ultimately it's the people that count though wherever you are

LaurieFairyCake · 02/12/2014 08:00

Can't you just go further North - when you said the North West I was thinking Cumbria was quite rural Grin

Dawndonnaagain · 02/12/2014 08:24

Another thread that's three years old.

Booboostoo · 02/12/2014 08:28

I used to live I rural Shropshire, quite an isolated location but we are very used to that.

There are some beautiful areas, but keep in mind that most villages have lost their post office, pub and shop so you'd need to get in the car and drive for even basic things. There are many more opportunities for walking, but be prepared for stiles, mud, sheep, cows and cow poo! You'll never see a bus again but then again you can't rely on public transport at all. Small schools can be great...unless something doesn't work out for your child and then there are much fewer options. I also found the countryside quite far to the right politically, with some people holding racist and homophobic views.

Come live in Tibberton (shropshire) - its pretty! Newport is a lovely town right nearby

specialsubject · 02/12/2014 10:17

this is an old thread but caught my eye because I live in one such.

we have a pub, a primary school and a long-opening hours shop. We have great walking on the doorstep. We have buses to town every 30 mins (admittedly not evenings or Sundays). Town is 10 mins away. Mainline station 25 mins. Two big cities under an hour away for those who have to commute.

we have oil heating. Costs the same as mains gas, cheaper at the moment.
we have a septic tank. No difference in use from normal toilets - you only put body waste and toilet paper down it, same as a normal toilet.

it is quiet but not isolated. It is no accident that we live here.

if anyone wants to move here, PM me for some rightmove links. But don't tell anyone. :-)

specialsubject · 02/12/2014 13:47

yes, I know - I wonder what happened?

chrome100 · 02/12/2014 15:21

I have no idea where Shropshire is Blush but I am across the Pennines in Yorkshire and we have miles and miles of commutable countryside - come here.

In any case, the NW does too! What's wrong with the Lake District, Forest of Bowland, Pennines, Lancashire?

specialsubject · 02/12/2014 15:56

much more rain...

suggest looking at a map. Smile

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 02/12/2014 17:15

Weird Zombie thread to be reactivated , anyway I love Shropshire, I'm a Shrewsbury bod, best county ever! Wink

Weird zombie thread and the resurrecting comment has been deleted.

vienna1981 · 02/12/2014 17:47

My sister used to live in Cressage which is part way between Telford and Shrewsbury. Admittedly she moved to another part of the county 27 years ago but it's a canny part of the world. Ironbridge, Coalport, Much Wenlock, The Wrekin and so on. The River Severn has a tendency to flood but otherwise, go for it.

toffeeboffin · 02/12/2014 18:53

Why don't you just move to the Ribble Valley? North West, easy access to M65, M60 etc etc. Beautiful, peaceful, no riff-raff.

AnathemaIsANiceNameForAGirl · 02/12/2014 19:34

I grew up in rural Shropshire and I clicked on this thread just to wallow in nostalgia over the place names Smile
