First time trying a coil.

Am i going to be in a lot of pain/ will there be serious amounts of bleeding?

or will 2 ibuprofen and a huge towel see me through an hour of shopping with my sister ?

I had a dull ache (like a period pain), minimal blood (few spots) and felt bit tired (probably due to small baby Hmm)

Wouldn't have fancied shopping but I HATE shopping anyway!!

gingernutlover · 07/12/2010 14:48

I had quite bad period type cramps after I had mine fitted, and bled for a while

A normal pad was fine for the bleeding and next time I would take painkillers 30 mins beforehand.

I had to drive myself home and thought I was going to faint, so no I would not have felt like going shopping.

BuntyPenfold · 07/12/2010 14:49

I had no bleeding but agonising cramps for several hours; completely fine by next day though.

BranchingOut · 07/12/2010 14:51

You will be fine. You might feel a bit delicate for half an hour, but I am fairly sure that I walked home afterwards.

It is slightly more uncomfortable than a smear test and less uncomfortable than a membrane sweep.

Bleeding? A large panty liner would probably cope.

Personally I'd ask your sister to be ready to change plans. Some people are fine, some aren't, as it's your first time you don't know if you will be.

I had my first coil fitted 4 weeks ago and I'm still bleeding/having bad cramps. I rang GP who said this is normal.
Sad

Hopefully not normal for you though Wink

mumto2andnomore · 07/12/2010 15:02

I was fine, a few aches that was all. I went straight to my dds sports day.Bit of spotting thats all. I dont get period pains anyway though so dont know if thats why.

mclazy · 07/12/2010 15:05

thanks a lakeland has opened in belfast and i am dying to go for a nosy. my sister will drive and its just the 1 shop with parking nearby.

was more worried about the bleeding than the cramps to be honest

That's a good point. What are your periods normally like?

Mine are horrendous (hence having coil fitted) and the people I know who have bad periods also seem to have bad experiences of the coil. Maybe the two are related.

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 07/12/2010 15:11

I fainted after I'd my first one put in but I hadn't had a child then - it was the opening of the cervix, etc.

I'd be prepared to reschedule at short notice if necessary.

Hope it goes well, though, and that you get your Lakeland fix!

harassedinhertinselpants · 07/12/2010 15:17

From the bleeding and cramps point of view I think you will be fine, especially if you remember to take pain killers 30 mins before hand.

I've had several coils, and for most of them have been fine, but one of them for some reason made my bp bottom out and I was very light-headed. Had to sit with the nurse for a while and then phone dh to come and get me.

I'd just see how you feel, and make sure you've eaten something.

GothAnneGeddes · 07/12/2010 15:38

Have you had children?

If no, then it is likely you will not feel like going shopping. After I had mine fitted, I spent several hours afterards rolling around the bed in agony.

If you have had children, then it may only be a mild cramp and some bleeding. I had mine put back in 6 weeks after having dd and barely felt it.

Catspersonalbanker · 07/12/2010 16:54

Having had one fitted and having not had children, I recommend internet shopping from the sofa afterwards.

Also depends on whether the person fitting it is very experienced or just the nominated one for the GPs surgery

Kaloki · 07/12/2010 16:55

I could barely stand after having the coil fitted! DH had to carry me back from the doctors! I was unable to do anything for about 12 hours afterwards

notquitenormal · 07/12/2010 17:03

I had mine 8 week post-partum and didn't feel a thing. No bleeding, no soreness, no pain.

I suspect it was still pretty roomy up there at the time Grin

Gracie123 · 07/12/2010 17:05

I had mine fitted by gynaecologist at hospital about 8 weeks after DD2 was born and had to be half carried to the car by nurse (luckily DH was waiting there with kids to drive me home).
Pretty peed off that I wasn't given any warning that it might be painful/nauseating/cause bleeding as without DH I wouldn't have been able to get home!

Not sure if it's to do with who does it or just how you react TBH because lots of people recommended this guy and don't have any problems. I don't think it's really his fault, I have very bad periods with cramps and bleeding, so it makes sense that if some people get cramps I would.

thanks for all replies - will definitely have a contingency plan in place.

have a ds 2.7 - had an emergency cs but was fully dilated so hoping that will have helped, no probs with heavy periods just wanted to try coil as implant wasnt great with constant bleeding hopefully coil will be better.
