Won't bore you with all the details but my friend (yes really my friend lol) has, following months of problems with cats shitting in his garden, placed a hundred or so wooden kebab sticks into his garden to deter them (genuinely not to hurt them, well, so he says!)

Is this illegal? He has been told it maybe based on fact you can't put glass on top of your fence panels to deter burglars etc.

Thoughts please.

Bingo! Well done and thank you! :)

"i don't let her out til she uses the tray."

Lara, if more cat owners were like you, the world would be a better place.

MeMudmagnet · 07/12/2010 23:05

Perfect Lara :)
That attitude should be the norm amongst the majority of cat owners and I can't see how any of them could disagree.

Wow there are some scarey people on this thread! Shock

I have two cats. The older one won't use a litter tray, we didn't get him young enough from the rescue people to train him. The kitten uses a tray. Fortuately we live next to a large field, and he buries his poo anyway.

For those of you thinking cats are useless pets, you have't got a clue. My two are extremely affectionate (the kitten almost too much so!). And if either of them were taken five miles away and dumped, we would all be heartbroken, especially my nine year old who loves them both to bits. Shame on you who suggested that, or weedkiller. I'm not a massive dog fan (although I love some breeds) but I would never dream of harming someones pet! Shock

newwave · 08/12/2010 00:47

glasto, never had a dog shit in my garden of damage plants. Easy answer keep your cats out of other peoples gardens and if you cannot or are unwilling to do so then dont have a cat.

auntyfash · 08/12/2010 00:47

My nextdoor neighbour threw cat poo at me and all over my washing. He's dead now.

auntyfash · 08/12/2010 00:50

How the fuck do you propose someone keeps their cat out of other people's gardens?

Tell you what, all you avid gardeners out there, stop growing pollen generating plants in summer. They give me hayfever.

auntyfash · 08/12/2010 00:52

And I'm not afraid to pour weedkiller over your beloved plants! HAHAHAHA!!!

newwave · 08/12/2010 00:53

Fair enough but dont make a fuss if they get stones thrown at them. As always some cat owners want to make the their problem (lack of control) other peoples problems (shit in gardens)

auntyfash · 08/12/2010 00:55

Don't make a fuss when I throw stones at your plants, or worse still, uproot the sneeze-inducing litle bastards!

newwave · 08/12/2010 00:56

If you find them shitting in your garden them please do

auntyfash · 08/12/2010 00:59

|They shit pollen into the air I have to breathe.

Anyway, this is silly.

GotArt · 08/12/2010 01:11

I'm not sure if it is illegal, but I can appreciate the frustration. I found this repellent that works wonders; Bobbex. It doesn't site cats and dogs, but I've found it does work.

newwave · 08/12/2010 01:14

The two sides have entrenched positions.

Some cat owners who dont care what their cats do and others who dont want other peoples cats in their gardens.

This thread repeats itself every so often always with the same results

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 08/12/2010 08:55

auntyfash - you can keep cats out of other peoples gardens by keeping them in the house.

Bunbaker · 08/12/2010 13:35

The neighbour or the cat? Grin

Some of the people on this thread have are quite vile. Sad

I have two cats. They are both indoor cats and so use litter trays (which I'd prefer not to have to have ideally) and don't annoy my neighbours. There aren't really any benefits to me in keeping the cats indoors, in fact, the opposite as I have to have several cat scratchers/trees all over the place and two litter trays, plus one of the cats insists on scratching everywhere except the cat trees/scratchers. Hmm I can't have windows wide open in the summer. I also have to play with them frequently and keep them amused, but none of that is really much different to what I have to do with my dogs and I accept pets come with their responsibility.

The benefits to my cats by being in are huge. No danger of being run over, bullied by children, harmed by dogs or other animals, no risk of FIV, being in a warm, safe, cosy environment and a longer life expectancy. They are perfectly happy to be in and get supervised access to the garden in summer.

My neighbours have outdoor cats and although I love cats and would never harm them, I do find them highly irritating. Several try to come into my house on a regular basis, one has tripped my youngest son up several times in trying to get int he door as he does. They come into my garden and annoy my hens (Imagine the uproar if my dogs got into someone else's garden and worried their livestock/pets/children) and they annoy my dogs. Yet, if my dog managed to catch and kill one in my own garden, no doubt the poor dog would be to blame...

It's perfectly possible to contain a cat to your own home or garden, but it is so acceptable in this country to let cats roam free that few people bother and just think it's perfectly acceptable for cats to do as they please. (they used to let dogs do the same years ago too.... )

naturalbaby · 08/12/2010 15:17

you can't compare cats and dogs, and most cat owners are not selfish. i let my cats out for fresh air and excercise - something every animal is entitled to. if they need to do their business somewhere then i can't chase them around with a litter scoop! between 3 gardens, an alley way, 6ft fences, 2 toddlers and a large bump there's no way. i always ask if they have used the litter tray before they go out to play but when you've got to go, you've got to go.

i do have issues with the cat owners who simply don't own a litter tray - i have met a few, one of their cats regularly uses the front of our house as their litter tray and i have been tempted to do all sorts.

Mummy2Bookie · 08/12/2010 15:25

Probably not illegal but I wouldn't like to be in his place if somebody walking in the garden injured themselves. I can imagine the solicitors with pound signs in their eyes............

Not to mention criminal charges from the police.

mogwhistle · 08/12/2010 15:29

I have 2 cats (after Christmas will have 4). They are indoor cats and are very happy - infact they show no interest in going outside at all so I beg to differ with the people who state it is "cruel" to keep a cat indoors.

I keep my cats in because I don't want to run the risk of them being hit by a car plus my elderly neighbours are very proud of their beautiful gardens and I would be mortified if one of my cats were to use it as a toilet.

TheFarSide · 08/12/2010 23:50

naturalbaby - what do your cats say when you ask if they have used the litter tray? Grin

jaffacakeaddict · 09/12/2010 09:25

Naturalbaby - I have to disgree with your point of view. WHy should your neighbours put up with cat poo in their gardens because you can't train your cats to use a litter tray? I appreciate it is difficult for you at present but just find it unacceptable that some cat owners expect others put up with their cat's poo. People wouldn't put up with dogs wandering loose and the resultant poo and I don't see why society should be expected to put up with cat poo either. Some of my neighbours have cats and I find it disgusting that I have to search our garden for cat poo before I can let my children out to play.
