to want to do something about my daughter's terrible dandruff?

Head & Shoulders ain't shifting it.

I'm cautious about trying stronger types of anti-dandruff shampoos as she's only five. She's always had it - it kind of developed from cradle cap when she was tiny, and it's been with us ever since.

It's not just a cosmetic issue either, as it really makes nit-combing difficult

Anyone got any tips?

AIBU to like the smell of polytar stuff? Use it on DS for his sebhor-something something - which was like cradle cap - and it's cleared it right up. Are you sure it's dandruff or could it be sebhor-something something?

PerArduaAdNauseum · 05/12/2010 00:14

(DS is 6 btw)

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 05/12/2010 00:16

I thought that was bloody rude and pretty ill-informed too.

No help coming from here.

firsttimemum77 · 05/12/2010 00:20

Polytar. I remember that from about 20 odd years back! My mum used to use it for me and my dandruff issues! Cleared it up! If I have a occasional itchy scalp now, or indeed occasional dandruff (dry scalp) I use polytar. It really is very good. I like the smell to PerArdua.

firsttimemum77 · 05/12/2010 00:21

too

YABU to people who have taken the time here to post about your daughter's dandruff and how to help her.

I have dandruff from time to time and found that massaging olive oil into my scalp usually works, just rinse with a gentle shampoo.

Or maybe that's a bit too "new age".

narkypuffin · 05/12/2010 00:31

Homeopathy isn't herbal medicine though- which often has clinically proven benefits eg St John's Wort. It's pure water with a tiny amount of something added. It's based on the theory that water has memory. The dilution is such that it's the equivalent of one drop of active ingredient in the Atlantic ocean.

LoopyLoopsOfSparklyFairyLights · 05/12/2010 00:38

That's not really the point.

"Thanks, but I'm not that keen on homeopathy" - fine, not rude.

OP's response - bloody rude.

narkypuffin · 05/12/2010 00:41

When you've heard Richard Dawkins on homeopathy the OP sounds positively polite!

I found by far the most effective over-the-counter shampoo for getting rid of dandruff was Selsun. Active ingredient was selenium sulphide. I think you can still get it.

onmyfeet · 05/12/2010 01:14

I recommend you simply thank people for taking the time to try and help, and resist from adding "even so and so".

They tried to help you out, why not be courteous in return?

Desiderata · 05/12/2010 17:27

I guess she's just a bit flakey ..

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 05/12/2010 18:00

tea tree oil in the final rinsing water is good for all scalp complaints like that - its antiseptic, antifungal etc and also keeps headlice away

I agree that its best to see a GP for dx though

SaggyHairyArse · 05/12/2010 18:06

My daughter has Capasal shampoo from the Dr and they took a swab and she had a fungal infection so had some cream to clear that up as well.

SaorAlba · 05/12/2010 18:12

Vosene is a good option. Only thing that works for me.

Stop Head and Shoulders immediately. I usually like it, but when my skin is sensitive (usually when I'm stressed), it actually causes flaking. Buy t-gel to use for the first week to get rid of the flakes, and then a completely fragrance and colour free shampoo. Only use conditioner every second time, and again, fragrance and colour free. If it is proper dandruff, it should reappear once you stop the t-gel, whereas if it is a skin sensitivity, avoiding fragrances should be ok. If sensitivity, try and avoid anything, even natural ones like lavender. My mom, for example, can't ever use those - which I found out when I gave her Neal's Yard products. I'm ok with it most of the time.
