For the past few days I have been willing to get to work which would have meant trudging through snow and trying to avoid the ice, but my school has closed, effectively stopping me from going to work. in those circumstances, I would not be at all happy to have to give up any part of my summer holiday in order to 'repay' days that I was forced to take off work. Many parents too, would be distinctly unhappy at having to forego part of the holidays they have already booked and paid for, that begin on the first day of the school summer holidays, likewise the Easter holidays. Oh, but wait, parents can choose to remove their children from school even if it is technically term time, something that teachers and support staff like me, do not have as an option!

Also, most support staff are paid hourly for a certain number of weeks per year. If they were forced to go in for more days, given that the closures were forced upon them, I think there would be a financial implication for the local authorities. Not sure about the situation with teachers, but I suspect they do not actually get 13 weeks paid holiday per year.
