Yesterday (1st Dec) was out and about in car with babies and a list of jobs to do. One being to stop at post office and get tax disk (I know it was last minute). Anyway during my jobs run I skidded into a ditch. We were all ok but car a mess.
Anyway car gone off on a lorry today and the lorry man commneted that the tax disk was a day out of date. Off course DH has been to post office today but now I am wetting my pants the insurance might not pay out :(
What do you think.

Its only 5 days grace the dvla give and that is only if teh tax disc is bought online. The whole system is computerised and it will have been flagged up as an uninsured vehicle on the first day the tax disc ran out but the automatic fines of £80 are not sent out for 14 days I think that is what mrscratchit will have been told.
Whats done is done, you are all ok thats what matters.

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 02/12/2010 22:15

They are shut now until Saturday due to snow

yes triphid an out of date mot will nullify insurance as the vehicle shouldn't be on the road.

MrsCratchit · 02/12/2010 22:18

No, she was very clear that it was quote, 'a two week grace period'. I head ip a risk management dept so am a little anal about recording these things. I accept that this may be duff information though..! Worrying service from the DVLA on that case.

MrsCratchit · 02/12/2010 22:19

Please accept my apologies for typos ladies. Damn iPhone.

Triphid · 02/12/2010 22:20

Thanks bumps.

toomanychristmaslights · 02/12/2010 22:23

Triphid I do think that the MOT being out of date would mean more problems with the insurance.

Sadly can't get that done on line!

soccerwidow · 02/12/2010 22:26

Out of date MOT does mean your insurance is void.

You can also buy your tax disc over the phone, I have often found the website slow & crap. When you do it by phone, you don't even have to talk to anyone, just press buttons Grin

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 02/12/2010 22:28

So do you think I will be ok?

OP posts:
emmie31 · 02/12/2010 22:36

i think you'll be fine,

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 02/12/2010 22:39

thanks emmie, hope so

Please be aware an out of date MOT will NOT nullify your insurance - this is a common misconception.

An out of date MOT does not necessarily mean that your car is not roadworthy - just that you don't have a piece of paper to say it is.

If your car is road worthy and you have bought MOTs in the past and forgotten one - this should not pose a problem in the event of a claim.

I am in insurance.

My husband's car was written off on the motorway (not his fault) he had missed the MOT by a few months - the Insurers knocked £50 off the settlement value - the car was roadworthy.

bumpsnowjustplump · 02/12/2010 22:41

I think you will be fine too

bumpsnowjustplump · 02/12/2010 22:43

but my insurance states that my car must be fully taxed and have a valid MOT.

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 02/12/2010 22:44

iamamug so in my case (I do have MOT just missed the tax by a day or two) do you think I will be covered ok?

OP posts:
iamamug · 02/12/2010 22:47

My experience is that most reasonable Insurers will 'take a view'

If you have never taxed or MOT'd your car - don't expect any help.

However, for those occasions when a mistake has been made and your car IS road worthy - most Insurers will cover you.

I have known them pay out in many situations like this . Sometimes no tax, sometimes no MOT- I have been in insurance for 30 years.

iamamug · 02/12/2010 22:49

trying I am sure you will be fine - please stop worrying :)

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 02/12/2010 22:50

Thanks iamamug

How bad is the weather where you are - can you use snow to help to explain why you haven't been able to do it on time?

And while you remember, write the date it changes onto your calendar NOW. Then write it again at the end of the calendar so it is ready to transfer into your new calendar (or put it in for next year if you already have it up and running), then the same for your diary, online diary, husband's diary, etc.

When you actually stick it into your diary for next year, don't just write the day it needs to be changed but for each of the preceeding 4 weeks, write a reminder note to yourself and your dh to prompt you to remember to do this.

I'm like you, it's so easy to forget, or to plan to do it when the reminder comes and then all sorts of other things happen that I need several reminders on the calendar to help me! I do the same for car insurance and house insurance too, have had too many last minute rush arounds. I have been known to book travel insurance quite last minute and when the man asked when I wanted it to start, to say 'immediately - the eurostar train's just pulling out of waterloo now' Grin while my dh sat there despairing!

iamamug · 02/12/2010 23:01

zipzap lol that made me smile - I can literally do my own travel insurance at work at my desk - in October I had to phone a colleague from the airport to do it for me!! Cobbler and his kids shoes comes to mind!!

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 02/12/2010 23:02

Its about 8 inches in our village! Yesterday was a terrible day so I didn't really have much hope of getting into the town centre to get my tax.....but I should have done it before I know.

OP posts:
zipzap · 02/12/2010 23:19

If they do say anything about it, definitely worth throwing into the mix, regardless of whether or not you should have done it beforehand Grin

Not like you were expecting snow in november and not like it is july where the weather provides no opportunity for excuses!

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 02/12/2010 23:21

Good thinking Zipzap!

onceamai · 02/12/2010 23:23
