To be surprised at how little British people seem to know about Ireland?

I'm from Ireland and I've lived in England for a total of two years. In Ireland we watch all the British channels and get all the British newspapers so most Irish people are pretty up to date on everything that's going on in Britain. Also, the Irish news tends to mention Britain a lot, so even if you only watch Irish tv or read Irish newspapers you'll still get a lot of information on current affairs in Britain.

When the whole thing with Ireland going down the pan financially came up on Channel 4 my mum rang me to say "Ireland's on the British news!" and we knew then it must be bad, simply because Ireland is so rarely mentioned over here. Now I know it's a tiny country but it's a close neighbour of Britain and a large population of Irish people live in Britain, so I would have thought it was reasonable that there would be a fair amount of mention of Ireland in schools and in newspapers and on the tv. But that's not the case.

Since living here it has struck me that so many people don't seem to know basic facts about Ireland, such as who the President is, who the Taoiseach is, what the native language is called, what the native sports are and so on. I've noticed in primary schools (not sure about secondary) that Ireland is rarely mentioned as part of history or geography despite the long and complicated historical links between the two countries.

Would it be fair to say that there isn't much mention of Ireland in Britain? Do you feel you know much about Ireland? Not saying we're special or owt, just curious.

but the day to day news coverage in England doesn't really cover Scotland or Wales either.

Just like in Scotland the news doesn't tend to cover much England, Wales or NI

And I'm sure the Welsh news doesn't cover much England, Scotland or NI.

To be honest I think since Scotland, Wales and NI were given some devolved powers the coverage of all of them has lessened.

dinosaurkisses · 01/12/2010 23:54

No spidookly, the country has moved on hugely in the last number of years. I'm in my early twenties and for my generation, those times are now the memories of our parents and grandparents. Obviously yeah, there are still some young people who cling on to the old way of thinking, but they're becoming rarer as more people wise up and begin to realise we're only holding ourselves back.

OohIsThatAFlake · 01/12/2010 23:56

What about the Isle of Man?

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 01/12/2010 23:58

god no - I can't remember the last time I saw a news article about the Isle of Man!

Monty27 · 01/12/2010 23:58

Cad e mar ta tu? Grin

Meths lol at 'A nation once again...'

spidookly · 01/12/2010 23:58

dino

God, I hope you're right.

BonniePrinceBilly · 01/12/2010 23:59

What about it? Surely most people know a bit about the Isle of Man?

Monty27 · 02/12/2010 00:00

There was a time you know when they didn't show the full map of Ireland on the Weather news. It was just 'The North' Shock Grin

IoM news is always about wanting to bring back the birch

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 02/12/2010 00:03

yeah Stuart Baggs (Apprentice) is from the IoM - so they have annoying arrogant people living there Wink

narkypuffin · 02/12/2010 00:05

The North west (of England) news includes stuff about the Isle of Man. One week there was an article on teletext about someone leaving a gate open in a field. It mentioned that some sheep may have escaped. I shit you not.

narkypuffin · 02/12/2010 00:06

Quite right too Monty27. No license fee, no weather Grin

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 02/12/2010 00:08

Will Greenhow has just become the new chief secretary (though oddly when you click on the link on the BBC Isle of Man news is shows as being listed under "Europe")

BonniePrinceBilly · 02/12/2010 00:11

Thats cos its not technically part of the UK, so it should be under Europe.

Monty27 · 02/12/2010 00:14

Narky oh is that what it was? Grin

So how come they show it now? Makes me smile every time.

TheNextMrsDepp · 02/12/2010 00:14

Well, dh is Irish, so I probably have more knowledge of the place than the average Brit. I certainly know who Mary McAleese is because apparently I resemble her slightly; I had a whole busload of locals in Dublin pointing and commenting on the fact recently. Blush

My dad won't go there, as he thinks the IRA will pounce on him as he gets off the plane in Dublin.......Hmm

I would say one thing, when I probe the depths of dh's history knowledge it's clearly very "slanted" where the English are concerned. Not without reason I suppose.

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 02/12/2010 00:15

so why when you click on the "England" subtopic on the BBC website do you get the Isle of Man on there........

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 02/12/2010 00:16

TheNExtMrsDepp = does he think the Germans are going to shoot him if he visits Germany too Grin

BonniePrinceBilly · 02/12/2010 00:18

Er, don't know, but the Isle of Man is certainly not part of England. It is a self governing crown dependency. Its not even in the EU.

TheNextMrsDepp · 02/12/2010 00:21

Baroquin - you're probably not far wrong! He won't go to the US either; all those pesky gun-totin' african-americans you see on the cop dramas will all be out to get him.

I think he reads the Daily Mail.

OohIsThatAFlake · 02/12/2010 00:24

Ha ha! It's part of England but not UK. I think. But definitely not part of Europe. Own government. Chief Minister (PM) called Tony Brown ( hilarious hybrid of recent British PMs!) Please don't bring back the birch. Being gay was illegal til recently.
My friend used to teach Stuart Baggs and she says he was a nobber then too.
If you leave a gate open and there's a suspicion that sheep may escape, you'll get birched.
It's really pretty and safe and friendly and quiet. And rich.

TT races, anyone?
Rubbish lesson on isle of man over...

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 02/12/2010 00:25

so basically they want to have their cake AND eat it.

They want to be included in the BBC "England" bit (well I'm guessing they do otherwise the BBC wouldn't bother.....) but they want to be independent too. Cheeky feckers Wink

Right back to the Ireland thing.

I wonder how much South Africans in general know about Lesotho and Swaziland (2 countries smack bang surrounded by SA).........
