I need to go out later this morning, snow is pretty bad up here and am running low on esentials such as baby milk and nappies. Plus i feel like we've been inside forever!

Cos of the bad snow, buses don't come anywhere near where we live (in a village high up a hill above the nearest town) so will walk the 40mins to the town, might take longer not sure what the roads are like once out of the village. anyway would it BU of me to put a warm (not hot!)water bottle wrapped up in the pram with DS (7.5m)just to keep the chill off? its ok for me walking as i'll keep warm but its colder for them sat in a pram...?

As long as its tightly closed etc would this be ok? WWYD? x

I wouldn't. It's probably safe but mine are always leaking. Blankets should be enough.

AlpinePony · 01/12/2010 09:15

I'd probably take the chance - but sod's law it'd leak and there'd be tears all around. Do you have any dried chickpeas/pearl barley in the cupboards? If yes, heat this up in the microwave and put in a pillow case or something like that.

ANTagony · 01/12/2010 09:18

Do no stores deliver online?

Have you tried a longish walk with a pram in the snow/ ice its quite hard work, would a taxi home be an option if its all a bit much once you're out?

starfishmummy · 01/12/2010 09:21

I'd probably do it too. When you are out can you get one of those heat pads filled with bran etc in case there's a next time??

mousymouse · 01/12/2010 09:26

I'd do it. I use my hot water bottle every night and it doesn't leak.
any grains (rice, barley) are not as good imo, as they give up a moist heat which is uncomfortable when it cools down again + don't hold the heat as long as water. been there - in a hut in yellowstone park with -15 at night (in the hut).
you can also use those gel packs that you use for cooler bags, just put them in hot water (not boiling) for a few minutes.

celebmum · 01/12/2010 09:29

I have one of those wheat bag things, its a hippo actually that goes in the microwave.. that'd be better wouldn't it? i forgot abt that! thanks!

ANTagony - yep.. will defo be getting a taxi home! or at the very least the bus as far up as it is willing to come! stores do deliver up here, but only need bits really.

I have slept with the same hot water bottle fron November to March every night for 12ish years.

It has never leaked.

It would be fine and is actually a brilliant idea, I am about to stick mine in the puchchair for my 2yo dd while we walk the dog.

Thank you very much, can't believe I have never thought of it before......

QueenOfFlamingEverything · 01/12/2010 09:35

I'd do it. But a wheatbag type thing would be better.

I've never had a hot water bottle leak - well, one burst, but that was because DD threw it down the stairs.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 01/12/2010 09:39

is baby bottle fed ??

Could you make up a bottle of water before you leave and stick that in bottom of pram ?? I've never had a hottie leak either

stickersarecurrency · 01/12/2010 09:48

Goodness, I've never ever had one leak and we all went to bed with them from as young as I can remember, and DS has had one for a year and he's 3.5. Couldn't live without them in this house, it's baltic and I'm reckoning we were down to -16 last night. I think if you use a newish bottle, don't use boiling water and make sure it's only 2/3 full and the air's squeezed out it will be fine.

HappySeven · 01/12/2010 10:02

My mum says she always put one in with us but under the mattress. If it leaks then gravity would take the water down although obviously some would soak up through the mattress. I'm certainly thinking of doing it.

BubbaAndBump · 01/12/2010 10:17

Why on earth would one suddenly leak? I do think cover it in blankets etc if it doesn't already have a cover but it sounds fine. Just remember to take it out when it cools down. Think he'll be fine with just blankets and hat etc (especially if you can cover his little hands and toes).

Ray81 · 01/12/2010 10:32

i would use the wheatbag thing, also put the rain cover on the pram as this will keep the warmth in. I do this with DD2 6months and she is so warm when iu get her out.

cubbie · 01/12/2010 11:07

I always used hot-water bottles when I took my two ds out in their prams/pushchairs. I wrapped them up in blankets and would put them at the bottom of their foot-muffs or at their backs.

They were lovely and cosy last winter during some of the coldest weather and there wasn't even a hint of them leaking.

One of them was a mini hot-water bottle with a knitted cover, it was perfect.

I'd say go ahead, keep your little one warm, just tighten it as far as possible and keep it upright. Can't see any problems.

mamadiva · 01/12/2010 11:28

I never thought oo doing this but I wish I had now!

I got a hot water bottle in a big Eeyore teddy case thingy years ago fior my birthday, I should really dig it out for DS.

I'd say go for it as long as it is wrapped up and not too close to LO you should be fine.
