to wonder why we don't eat dogs and cats?

Why do we eat pigs cows and sheep and various birds, but not domesticated animals like dogs and cats? Who made the conscious decision in history NOT to eat the abundance of animals we keep as pets.

Plus why do we only eat herbivores and not carnivores.

I'd say it's something to do with clean/unclean meat in the bible. What was religious law has become the norm which is why it seems odd to us to eat things not on the clean list (pigs are a grey area!!)

clean meat needs to chew the cud and have cloven hooves

That law probably came about (IMO) from health risks of eating animals who ate a more varied diet, but just guessing.

BeenBeta · 30/11/2010 19:33

We dont eat dogs and cats because we arent poor enough or hungry enough.

On the zombie/disaster thread - I think we worked through an entire zoo full of animals at one point. Grin

I swear in the past I heard Germans wore cat fur hats etc... Hmm

PussinJimmyChoos · 30/11/2010 20:18

I would not like to eat anything that can lick its own arse!

BeenBeta · 30/11/2010 20:31

Cows can lick their arses and pick their noses with their tongues and eat their own vomit - twice!

All that is in your daily pinta. I only drink soya myself. Grin

Mumcentreplus · 30/11/2010 20:37

I beg to differ Beta they can't lick their own arses...maybe each others tho Hmm Grin

Getorf, civet coffee is apparently the most expensive in the world and is made from coffee berries that have passed through the palm civet.

Fancy a brew?

MerrilyDefective · 30/11/2010 23:10

Pigs and birds are carnivores.

And cats make good slippersGrin

I've eaten camel and goat in Oman, deep fried insects in Thailand but I did draw the line at dog. We were in Chiang Mai and a local woman was telling us about the dog van that goes around the villages collecting all the dogs they see. Black dogs are believed to be the tastiest.
Durian is nasty, DD developed a taste for it that I seldom satisfied. The stench made me gag.

GrimmaTheNome · 01/12/2010 08:37

While Koreans do eat dogs, DH had a Korean colleague who was horrified that we happily eat fluffy bunnies (rabbit pie is delicious).

TrillianAdAstra · 01/12/2010 08:46

"I'm sure I remember reading that about bears - the honey-eating bears taste ok but the carnivorous bears taste worse"

I read that too - it's in Price Caspian Grin No ideas if C S Lewis is really an expert on the relative tastyness of bears..

create for the kosher laws, there is the view that some of them make sense, some of them don't (won't get into it, but it's very long and complicated). The health reasons are kind of an explanation, but not the only one.

Some theories put forward for not eating pigs (apart from them being specified as unclean) is that physically, their digestive system and organs are very similar to humans (like pig heart valves), so having them live near humans (if you're farming them for consumption), increases the risk of cross-species contamination (e.g. swine flu).
The other thing is that all the kosher mammals are herbivores. there's the health/cross contamination issue (as there's a higher risk if you're eating carnivores) and there's also spiritual reasons around raising the "level" of another being (also long and complex).

GrimmaTheNome · 01/12/2010 09:44

And of course you would never eat a talking bear Grin (remember Puddleglum's horror when he found talking stag on the menu at the Giants feast?)

i was in hanoi earlier this year babybarrister, and remember ending up in thit cho street, my sister a hardcore veggie, was nearly sick. in vietnam its good luck to eat dog at the end of the lunar month. when i go to asia and other places it just hammers in how much food snobbery we have. about 60%of the time i had no idea what part of a chicken i was eating but it was still good, whereas back home some people refuse to eat dark chicken meat. its all dependant on culture, we think Vietnamese are mad eating dogs and they probably think were mad for eating the convenience crap we do.

otchayaniye · 01/12/2010 11:43

At Tet (end of lunar New Year in Vietnam) my husband was offered congealed duck blood. Sounds horrid but then we eat blood pudding here.

Ryoko · 01/12/2010 11:49

I'd eat anything as long as the head and anus has been cut off/out, even if I have to do it myself.

I.E I draw the line at insects, too small to gut. but I would love to try dog, cat is meant to taste like hard stringy mutton tho.

otchayaniye · 01/12/2010 11:56

Ryoko - try Andouillette

Arse sausage. I'm adventurous, but this actually does taste of shit.

Ryoko · 01/12/2010 12:15

You know what, I'd try it, what the hell I would.

All this talk about meat eaters taste nasty and are not economically viable is bullshit, look at fish pretty much all the fish we love to eat in this country are the big carnivorous ones, we hardly ever bother eating the smaller ones, considering them fit only for the cat.

Millions of tonnes of small fish are scooped from the sea every year to feed a few fat fucks on fish farms so we can eat them later, such as Salmons, Shrimps and Trouts.

Just because we can't see the damage we are doing to the sea, doesn't mean we should just pretend it's not happening.
