to think that mums can put up Christmas trees too!

Dd2 has just given me a note from school. The Christmas tree arrives tomorrow and 'volunteer dads' (my italics) are wanted to help put it up!

AIBU to think WTF about this? Last time I looked women could deal with trees too? Hmm

YA absolutely not BU, but maybe they were (slightly feebly) trying not to ask the same people to volunteer all the time and figure most requests go mostly to mothers?

Grrr, stuff like this really pisses me off. It's no wonder there is so much gender steroetyping when it is taught in schools from day 1. I think you need to pull them up on it - I would.

ItalianLady · 29/11/2010 18:11

Maybe they just want to involve dads more.

campion · 29/11/2010 18:11

In the history of my family there would never have been a Christmas tree without the women doing it all.

But it might be a 20 footer and they need big, strong muscles Hmm

yes, mums can, and i'm the DIYer in our house - but... it can be hard to get dads into schools and sometimes the thought of being needed for a task like this can be the only way some dads can be persuaded in.

Hulababy · 29/11/2010 18:13

In DD's school it is always mums who volunteer and do it.

Maybe the school has requested dads to encourage dads to go in and do it, to have a dad presence perhaps?

In our house and family it is always the females who put up and decorate trees. DH helps by unravelling the lights - at my request as I hate doing it!

NorthernLurker · 29/11/2010 18:13

IT is a big tree - but we have some very tall strong mums too. (not me - am short and slope off to work asap anyway Grin) I just don't get why they didn't say 'parents' - they are very good about not making assumptions usually.

They will be needing some big strong year 6 boys to carry the decorations.

Sound like when I was at school. Only the older stronger boys were allowed to ring the bell for the end of playtime!

stealthsquiggle · 29/11/2010 18:15

Callisto - I would think the same, except that pulling them up on it would be tantamount to volunteering...

it is prob just a ruse to get the dad's in. if you are that arsed, get yourself along at the advertised time. if you are turned away you could do a rosa parks/emmeline pankhurst thing. refuse to move and then as the tree passes, throw yourself under it in the hope of raising awareness of such ishoos Bear

NorthernLurker · 29/11/2010 18:36

I don't want to do itGrin - just don't see why only dads are being asked. I very much doubt it's a ruse. Our school is quite unusual in that drop off time is heaving with dads - sahd and wohds alike. They have no need to try and get them involved.
