to be scunnered at the thought of another whole winter of snow...

...OK, so it looks lovely but it just makes life soooo difficult. I coulnd't get my car out this morning, and that was just because of how slippy it was. I guess it's just hitting me hard as last year I was on mat. leave so it didnt' matter if we didn't go out, but this year I'm working so it's different. Also, I hate driving in the snow - and feel especially nervous about it with my wee boy in the car.

Sigh.

GAG - think of people in the Baltic states! Life goes on there unbeleivably!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/11/2010 12:48

They are rather more prepared for it though to be fair!

I know what you mean - I have Scandinavian colleagues who always laugh at us Brits and our inability to cope with a bit of snow, but their whole infrastructure is built around the fact they predictably get hard winters.

Life will get on, and I will deal with it - but today - and today only - I will wallow in self-pity!!! :)

Yanbu - I feel exactly the same way!

MrsVidic · 29/11/2010 13:08

I feel the same- but there are positives- think of your DC building their first snow man!

sims2fan · 29/11/2010 13:12

I feel a bit selfish as I actually hope that we have non stop snow until about March! But I don't drive, live very near local shops, and could cope if I didn't have to leave my area much in the next few months. But I realise not everyone is in that situation, which is why I know I'm being selfish about it! I love snow though!

nickeldonkeyonadustyroad · 29/11/2010 13:14

I thnk winters are going to be like this from now on, so the govern, ent and the highways agency have got to get their arses in gear and get organised.

It's not hard to cope with long, cold, snowy winters, but because we haven't had to, we don't seem to be able to.

More groundwork preparation would be good, including having enough salt and grit this year!

snowboots · 29/11/2010 13:19

It does get tedious after months and months of it - last year/ beginning of this year was hard as there was snow here until April.

It is difficult to find the room to store all the extra things you need, especially if you get completely snowed in. Social contact (or the lack of) is also a scunner for the whole family.

I think the problem is that we (as individuals)don't prepare for snow. Does anyone have snow chains, or even winter tyres for their car? We also seem to have an expectation that life should continue exactly as normal, whatever the weather.

If it's snowing heavily delay your journey; it'll soon stop. And if you live in urban area the roads will soon be cleared enough to travel again.

And I think the HA an Local Authorities get a lot of undeserved criticism. Despite all the horror stories, did any of them actually run out of grit last year?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/11/2010 13:33

We have snow socks for our car Grin and enough wood, camping stove gas, food etc to last a couple of weeks with no external input. You are right though, it is about adjusting our expectations - but around here, despite being suburban our roads were not cleared last winter.

RipMacWinkle · 29/11/2010 13:38

OP are you me? I could have written your post! Was saying most of that to DH last night.

Completely agree with everyone, our winter tyres are on order. We can't possibly have the same winter/Christmas as last year. Almost made me convinced I had PND.

Am pretty sure our local authority did run out of grit last year. I think it was on the news. There certainly was very little gritting on anywhere other than the main roads around here.

bumperella · 29/11/2010 13:40

thisismybroomstick: I totally agree with you regarding individual preparation (snow tyres, having a shovel in the boot, etc). Lots of very cold places don't grit in the winter as it wouldn't help anyway - but people manage (a) becuase there car's are equipped, and (b) because they are very good at driving in it.
