Request from a buyer on e-bay

I have just sold my Pashley bike on e-bay - I made it very clear to prospective buyers that it would have to be picked up from my home - frankly I have no idea how to wrap it and make sure it is scratch free. However the buyer, who has not yet paid, has asked me to arrange for it to be shipped to him and although he will pay, I really do not have time to arrange for this to be done as I am incredibly busy as work (whole company is being made redundant and guess who is sorting out the HR side).

Would I be unreasonable to say that if he wants that to happen he must organise it himself and tell me how he wants the bike to be packaged?

I would tell him that you will not be arranging anything.
You stated that it needed to be collected, so why did he bid on it?
If you're that busy, you won't have extra time to go buy the wrapping, sort that all out, wait in for a courier to collect etc.
unless he wants to pay extra for your inconvienence then relist.

He should of asked about this when the item was on auction. eejit.

Dexterrocks · 28/11/2010 16:26

I agree

flowerybeanbag · 28/11/2010 16:28

YANBU. You said it must be collected, so it must be collected. He could presumably arrange for a courier himself to collect it, but can't expect you to start packaging it up or whatever.

Anymajordude · 28/11/2010 16:28

Don't do it, you said pick up only so that means pick up only.

Tiredmumno1 · 28/11/2010 16:30

Tell him you quite clearly stated pick up on the item, so he either collects or relist it

MumNWLondon · 28/11/2010 16:31

YANBU - you said pick up only. Ask him to arrange pick up and packaging.

he shouldn't have bid...

TattyDevine · 28/11/2010 16:32

Absolute pain in the arse. You will probably have to relist, because he wont want to pick it up. You will probably have to pay a fee for the sale even though you have to relist (though you can get a final value fee credit if he agrees to "cencel" the sale) and then relist for free IF the item sells next time)

And the best bit? You can't even leave him a negative feedback, though he can leave you one for not doing what he wants.

Nghrhrrahhhhhh

WhereYouLeftIt · 28/11/2010 16:32

I agree with everyone else . Buyers like these generally depend on the fear of bad feedback politeness of sellers to be unreasonable themselves.

TattyDevine · 28/11/2010 16:32

Cancel, even.

readinginsteadnow · 28/11/2010 16:45

Are you 100% sure you put pick up, rather than P+P free? A lot of listings do that by accident. Just make double sure before you kick up a fuss! Then tell buyer to pay an hourly rate to hir someone to wrap it and wait in for the courier.

LatteLady · 28/11/2010 17:04

I stated it in the main body of my advert saying "The bike must be picked up from my home at a mutually convenient time and date agreed by both parties" - so pretty definite.

Thanks, I thought I might just be being a bit difficult and was beginning to doubt myself.

Yes, I agree you should double check the exact wording on your listing to make sure nothing could've been misunderstood. Other than that, be straight with the buyer. Say you unfortunately do not have the time to do what he is asking of you and he either collects from you, or the sale gets cancelled.

NeverEatYellowTaintedSnow · 28/11/2010 17:08

Ah x-post, definitely clear!

Actuallawyer · 28/11/2010 17:12

I think some couriers will come round with a suitable sized box. Give him the dimensions and let him sort it out.

Glitterknickaz · 28/11/2010 17:18

Now see I wanted something that was collection only, so before bidding I contacted the seller and asked if I did all the organising whether she'd mind just making sure all the edges were taped and sticking an address label on, she didn't mind so I bid. That's how it should be done.

tiokiko · 28/11/2010 17:23

There are some couriers who will collect it unwrapped and wrap/label themselves - buyer's problem to find the courier, pay them and liaise with you on a convenient time.

I have had this in the past and the only thing I agreed to was to put the item in a bin bag (I'm pretty sure it was a baby car seat) - on the basis that this would give something to put the label on etc but it was her problem if there was any damage in transit.

She was happy with that and it was all OK - but she did ask before bidding.

AllOverIt · 28/11/2010 17:34

My DH sold his beloved Fender guitar last week and put collection only. A guy from miles away was desperate for it so arranged his own courier to come and collect it and paid all the costs himself. The courier came to DH's work to collect it.....

YANBU - They should have read the listing properly...

cumfy · 28/11/2010 19:12

He needs to pay you and arrange for a courier to collect.

hairytriangle · 28/11/2010 19:20

YANBU. if you made it very clear when selling, tough titty on him.

oldraver · 28/11/2010 23:10

I would tell him to bog off. B/F has been lusting looking at Pashleys for a while now and has to discount any he cant travel to. This is just cheeky IMHO

pigletmania · 28/11/2010 23:49

Relist, he should have read the listing or asked a question instead of bidding. Some people are so dim. I dont see the love Pashleys myself, they look more like a grannys bike, like my modern mountain bike myself. Matter of taste I guess.
