To have not tipped the hairdresser today

Basically didn't have any change to tip the hairdresser and paid for my highlights by card. Got a really dirty look from the receptionist. Felt really bad. I know they don't get paid loads.

I've never tipped anyone in my life!

TitianTinselTemptress · 27/11/2010 22:01

Pay is not necessarily crap wiggles my hairdresser earns more than my DH and me put together!

tummysgoingslowly · 27/11/2010 22:03

I think this brings us to an interesting point - there may well be hairdressers who earn very good money (like the one I just left because I couldn't afford him anymore, not the snoggee Smile) but then there are others who probably are struggling.

So maybe it depends a bit on the setup of the salon.

MrsSippy · 27/11/2010 22:06

my

redflag · 27/11/2010 22:07

Titian, how do you know that?

I can tell you, the only ones who earn a Good wage are the owners of the salons.

MrsSippy · 27/11/2010 22:07

oh balls

was going to say I never tip unless I have to - and it always feels a bit patronising too!!

CaptainBarnacles · 27/11/2010 22:10

I always tip hairdressers, taxi drivers and beauticians - because I assume that they don't earn very much. I earn enough that I can afford to do so. But often people react with surprise to a tip, so I think it's safe to assume that tipping is not the norm, and it's not a faux pas if you don't.

redflag · 27/11/2010 22:10

tummy, the younger ones earn nothing, the money comes with experience, as in many jobs. But they are rarely minimum wages you pull at first. And some people rent the chair, but not many. If you pay £45 for your hair to be done, that is the shops money, not the one who did the hair.

mayorquimby · 27/11/2010 22:11

Only tip when I'm in the states as it's impossible to get served at a bar in a busy club if you didn't leave a tip the last time. Anywhere else not a chance.

Hulababy · 27/11/2010 22:15

I rarely tip at the hairdrssers, unless it is December before Cjrostmas perhaps.

When I have paid £100 for a cut and colour I don't feel the need to add more to my bill. I always pay by card and rarely have change on me anyway. I don't tip when DD has her hair done there either.

frgr · 27/11/2010 22:17

it's never occured to me to tip mine

apart from anything i only ever have emergency petrol money in cash on me (ran out too many times without my purse so leave a tenner in the glove compartment these days Blush)... i always just use a card for most things now....

i'd have been gobsmacked to get a dirty look at the reception area on paying, i wouldn't be going back!

i'd much rather they add on a fiver to the costs, and that way it avoids the whole tipping issue if there is one. i didn't know people tipped hairdressers though - and from reading people's replies here, different tips to different salon people? i'm not really getting my head around that!

maybe mine thinks i'm quite rude for all i know! but i've been going years and it's never occured to me that it's an issue...

TitianTinselTemptress · 27/11/2010 22:18

redflag he is my BF's DP

Clary · 27/11/2010 22:20

You had to tip the hairdresser in Germany when I lived there (a long time ago).

I never do it here tho. My last haircut with half head highlights was more than £80. That's quite enough IMO.

I'm with Mr Pink on this one really.

unfitmother · 27/11/2010 22:21

I don't tip mine except at Christmas.

Figgyrolls · 27/11/2010 22:28

Last haircut I had (moved away so got new hairdresser!) cost more than £100 and they charged me for the sodding coffee I had whilst there. In addition to that I got a parking ticket as they "forgot" me. Errr not tipping methinks. I do think if you pay over say £50 you shouldn't have to tip. I don't tip taxi drivers either as in my previous experience they don't always take you the shortest route Wink would say this is in London only as I used to know the quickest routes home and was often suprised by the diversions!

santasbluebaubles · 27/11/2010 22:29

I never tip my hairdresser and I do usually feel guilty about it. However I only get my hair cut every 4-6 months (at a cost of around £35 a time) because I simply can't afford to do it more frequently. The cost of a tip on top is just too much.

narkypuffin · 27/11/2010 22:35

I always tip hairdressers. I usually tip taxis- if they take the piss and try to overcharge or go around the houses I don't tip.

tummysgoingslowly · 27/11/2010 22:35

So how much do you tip the hairdresser?

redflag · 27/11/2010 22:38

My mum is my hairdresser so i just give her a hug, thats enough Grin

Dylthan · 27/11/2010 22:38

My mum was a hairdresser years ago and was taxed on her expected tips I'm not sure if this is still the case.

If it is yab slightly u. I always tip mine but then it costs £24 so not as much as some of you are paying.

bupcakesandcunting · 27/11/2010 22:38

I used to tip my hairdresser about a fiver. Soon packed that in when he became a millionaire and had his wedding at The Dorchester, complete with Elton John Hmm

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 27/11/2010 22:56
