Why do people pay thousands of pounds on these monstrosities? They are either:

Too cold
Too hot
Leaking
You can be blinded by glaring sunshine
Never really used properly so tend to be used as a dumping ground.
Often make the garden far too small

Really, why do people bother installing them?

We had nice rattan furniture.Grin Wicker is for laundry baskets.

DancingThroughLife · 26/11/2010 16:08

I was about to post, but Nelix beat me to it Blush Grin

I think the right one, designed well for a clear purpose is a great idea. But the plastic-looking draughty ones should be banned.

Says she in the first floor flat and no hope of getting a house for a conservative conservatory any time soon.

nancydrewrocked · 26/11/2010 16:12

headfairy I have friends with a conservatory like that - it is the most beautiful room I'v ever sat in. I always leave her house thinking that what I want most in the world is a conservatory. Sadly wouldn't be quite the same on my house!

TheCrackFox · 26/11/2010 16:13

Aahh, I now see the problem - my mum has a plastic tat one and combined with her unbelievable stingyness may explain my prejudice towards them.

I'd love one-would be a great place for rabbit & GPs in Winter!Grin

TheCrackFox · 26/11/2010 16:23

Is there an actual, solid reason that rattan/whicker furniture is always chosen for a conservatory?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 26/11/2010 16:26

Unless they're attached to a kitchen to make it eat in, yy, they seem quite useless.

AnnoyingOrange · 26/11/2010 16:31

my ds is currently playing on the ps3 in our conservatory

so yes I like them as it stops him hogging the TV in the living room Smile

Niceguy2 · 26/11/2010 16:34

Some are indeed rubbish. I've seen some tiny ones (what's the point?) and most are not properly designed. Mine included.

The previous owners had it built by the builders who built the house and they half-a-jobbed it. Like everything they did. So they put a lovely sized conservatory in but neglected to put any heating in. Result is it is freezing in the winter. Unfortunately after the event, it take a lot of time/money to retrofit underfloor heating. But what do I expect from a bloke who paints around the bed rather than move it out of the way! I shit you not!

A good friend of mine has built a much bigger conservatory, put proper insulation & heating in and they use it all the time, like another lounge. It's lovely.

craftynclothy · 26/11/2010 16:47

We have one and it is cold in winter. We have a free standing heater thingy for it. It doesn't get too hot in summer though because of it's position.

I use it as my craft room. It's lovely.

If we could have afforded it, I'd have preferred a loft conversion though so YA possibly BU but not totally Grin

mollymax · 26/11/2010 16:49

I love ours.
We had it built this year.
Use it all the time as a playroom, wii, computer and sewing room.

HeadFairy · 26/11/2010 16:49

Nancy my mum and dad were desperate to get one like that on their house, but were quoted 100k Their house is 400 years old so I think a conservatory looks all wrong anyway. Victorian rectories yes, 400 year old cottages, no.

We have one and it’s rubbish. Freezing in winter and boiling in summer. Useless

Kestant · 16/03/2018 21:20

Because people have money and wankers sell them tat.

Conservatories. Coronation Street. Ready Meals. Costa Blanca. Mumsnet.

Tat, served on a plate for Fuckwits.

PorkFlute · 16/03/2018 21:24

What about porches then? Just put some coat pegs up, get a shoe rack and draught exclude your door if necessary. Never has there been a more useless thing than a porch.
Let’s everyone know you’re on holiday when your letters pile up as well!

YouCantBeSirius · 16/03/2018 21:39

@Lanie23 why have you resurrected multiple threads about conservatories? Are you promoting your own business?

nokidshere · 16/03/2018 21:53

Ours doesn't have heating but it's not particularly cold in there and it's used all year round.

When the children were small it was a fab playroom with shabby chic comfy sofas and all the toys, books and games. Now my boys are teens it's a handy space for them and their friends to hang out in.

And not a stick of wicker furniture in sight

givemesteel · 16/03/2018 22:25

Clearly spam and very annoying.

If I ever want to redo my conservatory I must remember to not use the company above, so poorly advertised.

Have reported.

TrickyD · 16/03/2018 22:47

I love ours!
It faces east, catches a little morning sun but never overheats, cosy in winter as it has underfloor heating, big - we once managed to fit in 29 people for a sit down dinner though normally we just use the dining table at one end which can seat 10 people as an alternative to the dining room itself. We also have a couple of chairs and a cream leather chesterfield sofa bed where we sometimes sleep on very hot evenings with the doors open. And lots of plants climbing around.
I can't unsderstand how we managed without it.

NewYearNewMe18 · 16/03/2018 22:47

How bizarre, all these conservatory threads.

It's a sun room. Heat it properly, regulate its temperature.

chocolateworshipper · 16/03/2018 22:50

We love ours, but then we do have heating in there to keep it warm in the Winter and in the Summer we keep it cool enough because there are 2 sets of double doors as well as the windows, so really good airflow.
