Anyone want to continue from where we left off?

I'm Germaine Greer!

EminentlyImminent · 01/12/2010 15:02

I was posting On the old thread under a different name but name changed due to revealing a bit too much personal info....but I recently came across this site which did make me laugh (and for me summed up nicely some of the arguments a few of the male posters were making - I wonder if they recognize themselves as a 'meme'?)

Privilege-denying dude

sixpercenttruejedi · 01/12/2010 15:08

Grin there's a few threads that could do with that link.

Truckulent · 01/12/2010 15:20

I thought according to Richard Dawkins we are all Defined by Memes?

EminentlyImminent · 01/12/2010 16:09

Good point Truckulent - if you viewed the Privilege-denying dude as an evolutionary cultural meme in the way Dawkins characterises, then you automatically arrive at, yep, you guessed it: Patriarchy. Natural selection dictates it to be so.

I was just posting it as a light-hearted laugh at the type of arguments you hear over and over again (and we saw on your previous thread - hey - who knew you'd set this much discussion off? Good debate all round) but your Dawkins comment adds a new twist and a way of applying and thinking about The Selfish Gene as applied to patriarchy that I hadn't really considered before.

Truckulent · 01/12/2010 19:03

EI.

I have to be careful when posting as I can't always tell when people are joking or serious, and I can't say it's cos i'm a man as that makes it worse!

I don't think MN is ready for many male posters, but if I'd never arrived here (after doing an English lit course that covered feminism) I would never know about the issues in society. So if some men post the meme will spread, possibly. Or I could be talking rubbish.

Anyway it's changed some of my thinking.

Men and women

we know men are generally bigger law breakers than women.

The last figures I saw were 80,000 men in
prison and about 7,000 women

Men tend to be more adventurous than women

When Armstrong landed on the moon, some women said "whats the point?"

The point is it is ingrained in some men to travel as far as they can whatever the cost or danger.

the photo taken of the earth from the moon was fabulous

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 02/12/2010 13:41

No idea what Gabby is talking about, sorry Gabby.

Caron, I don't see what is hypocritical about this: "constantly reminded that women are not labelling all men as Rapists etc, however informing us that all women are oppressed by a patriarchial society". Of course not all men are rapists. In what way does that cancel out the idea of the patriarchal society? Patriarchy is a system really, it doesn't require every man in it to be an arsehole. It just involves a concerted effort to perpetuate the traditional roles/perceived abilities, level of worth etc of men and women. Thereby keeping women down. We know women were kept down 100 years ago. And 50 years ago. But now it seems that acknowledging that society is still clinging to its sexist hangover is an extremist view. Just seems obvious to me.

GabbyLoggon · 03/12/2010 12:36

Elephant "You dont understand" prison population
or man on the moon

Which nunnery or monastry are you hiding in?

GabbyLoggon · 03/12/2010 12:40

Richard Dawkins is just having intellectual
fun.

He no more know whether God exists or not than does the Arch bish of Cant..(I needed to watch my spelling with that line.)

There is reason and faith (They are different things.)

Is Mother Nature the real Godess?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/12/2010 14:34

Sorry, should have said: "while I understand the words Gabby is typing, I fail to understand of what relevance they are to this discussion".

Better? Xmas Grin

EminentlyImminent · 03/12/2010 17:04

Gabby I think the references above to Dawkins was for his book The Selfish Gene published back in mid-70s and not his more recent work The God Delusion. Not sure anyone was debating faith/reason/atheism/deism in the context of sexism and patriarchy (although there's a lot there to discuss seeing as religion has been one of the most successful ventures in keeping women down for the past two millenia)
