I have never posted on here before, so perhaps you get used to it?

Thats the way it is on loads of forums I take it to be ironic. No one could accuse MN of being prissy. We don't do hugs and we swear and then theres the saturday night threads ...

whoknowswhatthefutureholds · 25/11/2010 20:22

I agree they are really annoying but you soon ignore them.

AMumInScotland · 25/11/2010 20:33

I found it odd at first, but you soon get used to it. Amongst all the other weirdness on here, frankly a few acronyms is nothing! Though there are some I find twee like BDing.

If you prefer, just use "son" "husband" "older daughter" etc, no-one will mind.

People also use "D"D etc when they don't think "Dear" is the right adjective.

Catnao · 25/11/2010 20:43

WTF is BDing? The mind boggles...

OP posts:
CrystalQueen · 25/11/2010 20:46

I never understand why people refer to their ex DH. Surely by being ex he is no longer D.

Hulababy · 25/11/2010 20:47

I type DD, but actuall only read it sa "dd" too. I don;t read the dear/darling or whatever. I just see DD as daughter, DH as husband.

Most parenting sites use the same abbreviations.

I don't like BD - it means "baby dancing." i.e. sex. Used mainly on the conception threads I think. hate the phrase though.

Don't like AF either.

toddlerwrangler · 25/11/2010 20:47

Can't STAND the D prefix, so it is Toddlerwrangler, Mr Toddlerwrangler and Alfie in our house as far as mumsnetting is concerned!

Catnao · 25/11/2010 20:49

ex DH?? Hahahaha!

OP posts:
RockinRobinBird · 25/11/2010 20:52

It's not just on here, it's everywhere, even non parenting websites. You mustn't visit many forums then.

AMumInScotland · 25/11/2010 20:53

Yes, when I read or type DH etc I don't think "dear husband", a DH is just a different term, separate from the original. Same with lots of acronyms - LOL, WTF etc. I don't translate them into the full version.

A1980 · 25/11/2010 20:54

I think the DD and DS is a bit daft when i found out what it meant.

I think H, D, S, D1, D2, S1 is sufficient to understnad each other without the D pre-fix.

But whatever.

SuePurblybiltByElves · 25/11/2010 20:55

BD and AF make me vom. And if anyone comes near me sprinking baby dust I'll 'ave 'em.

I don't like DH/DD FWIW Grin but I have an XP so I'm not too troubled. DD is DD or Small Purblybilt.

Catnao · 25/11/2010 20:55

Is it? I've never seen it before! But I don't use many forums, you're right - only one other, in fact.

OP posts:
theevildead2 · 25/11/2010 20:55

I think it makes more sense, as if you use just S or D or F, you can lose them when reading a sentence or more likely to typo.

Feenie · 25/11/2010 20:55

Yes

Catnao · 25/11/2010 20:56

Ok - so what's AF?

Hulababy is that really what BD means?! That's nauseating!

christmasheave · 25/11/2010 20:58

Auntie Flo Blush

Catnao · 25/11/2010 20:59

Bloody Hell.

Catnao-That's the other name for it Wink

KittyFloss · 25/11/2010 21:03

It's not just on here though is it, I think dp/dh/ds/dd are found all around the internet, hence decent shorthand. Mn has the tendancy to think it has invented everything, from norks to every other acronym going.

ChippingIn · 25/11/2010 21:43

If it's just a single letter it gets lost and not many of us want to type out 'Your husband/partner'... it's as good an acronym as anything else... I am sure there are other parenting forums that don't use them if you'd be happier...

GiselleS · 25/11/2010 22:58

Hate AF, always make me think of my horrid Auntie Florence!

I sent an email to our secretary today and told her myself and DH couldn't make the Christmas party.

Had to send another email after saying I meant husband and blamed typo. Damn MN getting in my brain!

BecauseImWorthIt · 25/11/2010 23:00

There's no rule that says you have to use any of the acronyms here though! If it irritates you, just type 'son' or 'daughter'.

NunOnTheRun · 25/11/2010 23:03

Understand you, OP. In most cases the 'D' bit is usually followed by a torrent of abuse :o
