in expecting to be able to find a nice comfortable large sofa ?

OK so I know this isn't the end of the world.

But I'm getting hacked off - all I want is to buy a nice comfortable sofa, that:

• is going to last more than a couple of years
  
• doesn't have feather cushions (dh allergic
  
• is not really low to make it difficult to get out of for the grannies that come to visit
  
• is deep enough so that when you sit down all your thigh is supported to the knee, you're not left dangling your leg miles away from the edge of the sofa
  
• is high enough so that when you relax on it you can relax your shoulders and head against it
  
• does not look like a dodgy relic from the worst of 70s design for middle aged folk who talk about 'slacks' instead of 'trousers'
  
• is long enough for me to lie on, flat without needing head and/or feet to be on the arm at one or both ends.
  

Oh and did I mention, I just want it to be comfy...

So far over the last couple of years I have sat on hundreds of sofas looking for a simple comfy sofa - from places like dfs, furniture village and scs to dwell, john lewis, m&s, habitat, heals, assorted independents both cheap and expensive. And so far not a single comfy sofa, always something wrong with them.

So thought I'd vent on here and see if IABU to want a sofa, to wait out for one (do have an old one that isn't very comfy that needs replacing, plus in new house and with more kids now we need a second) until I find one (dh thinks I just just buy the first one I see and put up with it but am fed up of not being comfy sitting down - he thinks I am too fussy but I think I just know what I do and don't like )


And also to pick people's brains to see where they have had great sofa's from - or places to avoid!

I looked for ages and found my perfect sofa in next. They are so comfy and lovely looking and there is a great choice of fabrics and styles. I was lucky as I found mine on sale as they are quite expensive but they are worth it!

They are great you design the sofa yourself, you can remove ALL the covers, hence having a brand new sofa every year, google them you will be really pleased!!!!

We have the most comfortablw sofas in the world.

We have had them 4 years now and STILL often comment on how much we love them.

IF we ever get divorced, forget the children, we will fight to the death over our sofas.

It's Ikea. Ektorp I think? But I just looked and they don't seem to do a 4 seater which ours is. Well, 2 cushions, but 4 people wide and even 6'4" dh can lie on it.

I have sat on the sofas in next and ikea too - must admit they have also been quite low down in my list of comfy sofas so far - but will got and check them out again.

And I am keeping my eyes on ebay, but so far most of the ones I have liked have gone for loads of money. no 99p bargains unfortunately!

don't live in london any more so more tricky to get to conran to check them out, will see if I can sort out a daytrip , would be nice! Will also see if I can get to NABRU and sofa.com, guess I have been so picky so far that I am loathe to order something I haven't sat on given usual levels of uncomfortable-ness in most sofas so far.

Redflag - when I first saw NABRU I was trying to work out if I was Not Actually Being Really Unreasonable or something like that and it was an AIBU variant acronym I had missed out on... then I realised it was the name of the shop - hadn't heard of them before so good to see something new.

Multiyork are my current best bet - sofa I like isn't high enough at the back really (and although they claim they can add extra bits to sofas it is never to the ones that I like ) - and they have an extra 10% off sale prices w/e of the 4/5th December so thought I would have a last blast of looking before ordering then. DH is pointing out that I promised I would choose sofas before christmas - but that he thought it would be that year's christmas (2007) rather than one several years on . So I really do need to go ahead and just do it!

where do you live? i have a large comfy sofa i cant fit in my house and want to give away.

Its the DFS Dario sofa of a few years ago, its chocolate mocha brown leather and is like a cloud to sit on.

I don't know if you are after leather, but we got ours from these people and they are high, and pretty comfy. They do such a range of sizes you are bound to find one which fits.

IME you have to compromise a bit. The nice deep ones with shoulder and neck support are generally a bit low. It's no use to you because it's an Irish company, but we bought this and also bought a couple of bailey chairs for older visitors. (The sofa looks much better in fabric btw.)

My big sofa is from Heals (model called Slouch, I think ) and was fabby for a few years, but now at least one of the seat cushions needs re-stuffing, not nearly as comfy as was. Has had 2 x DSs bouncing around it for 5 years, though. And is nice and deep, so good for curling up on. Feather cushions, though .

I quite often gaze longingly into Multiyork and Sofa Workshop, but given our current financial state, I can dream on, I think.

We bought ours a couple of years ago and it was a devil of a job to find one we liked.
Looking at your list of requirements, our sofa might suit you! We got ours from CSL in Oldham. They are a chain though, so there might be one nearer to whereever you are - they are quite large, the styles weren't too fussy and were sort of mid-range pricing.
The only thing I'm not so keen on is that its a leather sofa - bit cold to sit on at first but soon warms up.
