Whilst I accept that some clothes cannot be worn past a certain age I was suprised to be told by a younger colleague at work Converse should not be worn past 35 (I had just purchased a new pair during lunch) at 50 I am banned from Converse it seems. AIBU to be Confused

(and my Gola plimsoles) Wink

diddl · 25/11/2010 13:31

Oh, I thought that they were a baseball boot that had become a fashion item.

My mistake.

MJB66 · 25/11/2010 13:45

They are baseball boots diddl, my neice has a pair

diddl · 25/11/2010 13:59

Perhaps I should have put the wearer looks as if they should be doing sport.

I´m so old that I have done the baseball boot/skinny jeans combo so I guess that´s why I think best left to the teenagers.

Now I´m older I just prefer a proper shoe or boot with my skinnys jeans.

I think I would find the Converse sole really uncomfortable.

diddl · 25/11/2010 14:02

Tummy

Plimsoles-that´s a word that I haven´t heard for many years-since I was at primary & thats what we had to wear for PE (as it was called then)

WriterofDreams · 25/11/2010 14:17

I was informed by one of my pupils (aged 10) that my converse were cool, thank you very much. I am 27, so not quite at the age where it appears most people must resign themselves to beige and boring, but not exactly a teenager either.

Plus I wear Gap clothes because they are good quality and I like the simplicity and fit of them. I have often been complimented on my clothes from Gap. It annoys me when people say "Oh anyone should wear anything they want" and in the next breath say "But why on earth would you wear (insert well-known brand)" People seem to think it's cool to reject big brands and believe it's fair to criticise people for buying them, but in my view criticising people for wearing mainstream clothes is exactly the same as criticising them for wearing unusual clothes. It's judgemental and shallow.

Mowiol · 25/11/2010 14:43

If I had a pair of Converse I'd wear them!

Always wanted a pair of flashy Doc Martins but they are too wide for my feet.

I am not prepared to go off, get a blue rinse and invest in some "nice acrylic cardies" even though that's what my MIL was (and still is!!) doing at my age.

I don't do really young and trendy and I realise full well that I will soon have batwings but I like to think I can still wear youngish fashion without looking ludicrous.

Goldenbear · 25/11/2010 14:58

I am 33 and have hesitated over buying another pair of Converse but only because I read an article about them being worn by David Cameron, Nick Clegg and alike at the weekend!

I therefore do not think I am too old for them. In fact I would think the opposite is true perhaps you should stay well clear of them if you are under 30!

diddl · 25/11/2010 15:02

as worn by..

TBH I just don´t like them.

JamieLeeCurtis · 25/11/2010 15:08

What you need is pretendy Converse. I can dress inappropriately for only £8 from Sainsbury's, in lots of nice colours.

memoo · 25/11/2010 15:11

I am 37 and have a pair on Converse and some DM's too. Your friend is talking rubbish

diddl · 25/11/2010 15:18

But just because some of you who are older than 35 have them, doesn´t mean that they look good on youBlushGrin

diddl - you'll just have to trust me.

maninthemooncup · 25/11/2010 17:28

sigh

I was just thinking yesterday how much I hate it when "for her age" is tacked onto the end of a compliment about someone's looks. Carol Vorderman looks GOOD, and she'd look good if she were 40 or 60. I wouldn't choose some of her outfits, but I'm sure she wouldn't choose mine.

1944 girl has it right, she feels good in minis but not skinnys so sticks to what suits her. I have always worn things I "shouldn't" and have dressed like an old lady since my teens :)

Converse at 50 absolutely fine and dandy imo, if you like them you wear them!

tummysgottogo · 25/11/2010 17:30

1944girl I love your attitude Smile

i think everyone should wear whatever they facy , if you feel great you will look great no mater what age , i know a man who has a huge beard shaggy hair wears trousers that look like curtains and tunics with wizard sleeves he is very attractive because he is so confident with who he is and is completely comfortable in his own skin/sense of dress .

mangoandlime · 27/11/2010 08:34

Late 30s, wear my Fab purple Converse with pride. I'll leave the Clark's Soft to others, thanks all the same. Grin

BikeRunSki · 27/11/2010 09:22

I have been wearing Converse since I was 13. I have just turned 40 and have no intention of giving them up.

My younger colleagues do have a list of slang words I am not allowed to use though!
