AIBU to think I am the only person in the country who does not get Ricky Gervais?

OP posts:
Maleeka · 25/11/2010 18:24

Im with you sunshineriver about Michael McIntyre, its all about the man drawer! Grin

I've never really liked RG but i was flicking through the channels and caught some cartoon version of his show, and am embarassed to say i found myself cracking up, maybe it was the other 2 that watered down his crapness Grin

dracschick · 25/11/2010 18:24

I used to think he was a bit funny ,my lips sometimes twitched when he does something unusually humourous......however he made a crass joke about M.E that made me want to burn his eyebrows off and pull his teeth out with pliers .....Angry.

The mans a twat.

BonniePrinceBilly · 25/11/2010 18:26

I think he's fucking hilarious, not as much as Frankie Boyle, but funny. Who cares what other people like, its about what you find funny. You can't be objective about funny,

colditz · 25/11/2010 18:29

I hate RG yet love the Inbetweeners.

Strange.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 25/11/2010 18:33

Nope - I don't like him either. I really hated The Office and I don't think he's all that different in real life.

I saw his 'joke' about M.E. too, and I was hoping my mum who has it, wasn't watching.

I can't stand Frankie Boyle either.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 25/11/2010 18:34

Think The Office and Extras are genius, the stand-up is passably amusing if not his bag and everything else meh.

I don't think he is someone I would love to have as a bezzie mate. He is mostly all about himself - he needs an audience rather than a relationship but that is true of almost all comedians.

I love the work of (off the top of my head) Tony Hancock, Victoria Wood, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Kenneth Williams, Eddie Izzard, Reginald D Hunter etc etc etc. Do I long to invite any of them - living or dead - to a cosy chinwag over a cuppa? No way - a bunch of self-absorbed prickly neurotics, addicts, deluded narcissists and depressives, one and all. That's what it takes to be a great comedian Grin

Miranda Hart is the only comedian I can think of who would be good company and fun IRL. And as much as I love her, she's no Bill Hicks.

MooMooFarm · 25/11/2010 18:47

I loved The Office, and the Christmas Special particularly.

But since then I've hated everything else he's done. He just comes across as a smug, ignorant arse and definitely can't act. Maybe that's why he was so good at playing a smug, ignorant arse in The Office!

sharbie · 25/11/2010 18:48

yy one trick pony - his record on jokes re illness/disabilities is unforgiveable imo

gingerwig · 25/11/2010 18:52

he's dreadful and not funny

YourCallIsImportant · 25/11/2010 18:53

YANBU, he's a tosser smug git.

lolaclare · 26/11/2010 09:42

I find him hilarious and love his over-confident, arrogant persona.

As TondelayoSchwarzkopf says above, the best comedians are usually not people you would want to be friends with as there is something usually missing in their personality that makes them seek approval and validation through making an audience laugh. Most of the best comedians are a jumbled up bag of personality flaws - but that feeds into their comedy.

What did he say about M.E? He often has jokes about disability in his act and on TV but I always get the impression that he is mocking the attitude he is espousing.

Nancy66 · 26/11/2010 09:45

Sean Locke is the comedian that makes me laugh the most at the moment.

Eddie Izzard is the one I don't 'get' - I find his surreal observations are very affected and unfunny.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 26/11/2010 12:20

Yes - I agree Nancy66 - Sean Locke is very funny - so many comedians don't manage to make me actually properly laugh - but he does. And I like Bill Bailey a lot, too.

upsylazy · 26/11/2010 12:34

I loved the Office but it's the only thing he's done I've found funny. I think it's a bit like the Emperor's new clothes - people are too embarassed to say they don't find him funny because he's always portrayed as a comedy genius.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 26/11/2010 12:35

I think he is mocking the attitude to disability too - Office and Extras were produced by Ash Atalla after all.

That said, I think Frankie Boyle is hilarious. I don't like that I do, but he is.

twolittlemonkeys · 26/11/2010 12:37

I'm with you. I just don't find him funny to watch at all. I just cringe. And not even in a funny cringing way. Can't stand him!

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 26/11/2010 12:37

NB: if you like Sean Lock have you all seen 15 Storeys High ? I think I am the only person who watched it. Pure unadulterated comedy genius.

ginnny · 26/11/2010 12:39

I liked The Office, but since then I think he has disappeared up his own arse.
I also hate the way other twats 'celebs' such as Jonathan Ross and Chris Evans have followed him up there.

Michael Macintyre however has me in fits - I love him!

insertamusingnamehere · 26/11/2010 12:52

15 Storeys High was genius... but findning anyone who saw it nigh on impossible.

But yes, Ricky Gervais.. one trick pony, though I don't want to injure him, unlike Michael Macintyre, who I'd like to stab with a biro, each to their own and all that

mamadiva · 26/11/2010 12:52

He is the only person in the world I would like to stab in the eye with a pencil (not literally but that sums up how much I actually loathe him).

Have no idea why but I have to turn over/walk away from TV if he is on it, all my friends and family know this and find it rather amusing that I can actually hate someone I have only seen for about 10 minutes on TV lol

nbyet · 26/11/2010 12:53

I absolutely love Ricky Gervais, he is my favourite comedian. I especially love his stand-up, it appeals directly to my sense of humour. One of the things I find most funny is the little skits he does, and the faces he pulls while he is doing. One of my favourite clips is the Hitler/Nietzsche clip from the Politics show, you can watch it on youtube.

By contrast, I can't stand Frankie Boyle.

mamadiva · 26/11/2010 12:55

Oh should have read thread, am soo glad someone else thinks about stabbing random slebs with pens too LOL

Although I love Michael Macintyre to bits :o

Mad how people can have such differing of opinions about someone they don't know (or do you know MM... can I have his phone number and address :o)

bintofbohemia · 26/11/2010 13:04

I think Ricky Gervais is probably a deeply unpleasant person.

I also think that The Office and Extras was pure genius though.

IslaValargeone · 26/11/2010 13:08

Can't stand Gervais.
I am completely in love with Dylan Moran however. He makes me cry with laughter.

mippy · 26/11/2010 16:22

"I love the work of (off the top of my head) Tony Hancock, Victoria Wood, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Kenneth Williams, Eddie Izzard, Reginald D Hunter etc etc etc. Do I long to invite any of them - living or dead - to a cosy chinwag over a cuppa? I shared a train ride from Liverpool with Reg D Hunter once. He is very very nice in real life, even when a scally grabbed his crotch to 'see if it's true about black men'.
