i want to open a bank account, i havent had one for 2 years, havent got good credit rating had bout £1000 debt between 2 cards (one debit one credit) but at present i sort of dont exist lol everything is in DPs name child benefit etc, i really want to have my own account, so i can put child benefit in my name.
i have really low confidence and dont want to walk into a bank to be turned down.

does anyone know if a bank/building society etc would accept me and what bank to go with?

also can i do it all online??

big thankyou for reading this when its posted in the wrong place :)

I think you can do it all online these days.

LaurieFairyonthetreeEatsCake · 24/11/2010 19:40

try firstdirect or smile - both online banking Smile

BelleDeChocChipCookieMonster · 24/11/2010 19:41

All of them will, you can get a basic account. Barclays are OK, as is the co-op. I don't think that you can do this online as they need to see some ID (birth certificate and utility bills sort of things)

Serendippy · 24/11/2010 19:42

You don't need a quick answer for this. But as I have read it anyway...

Most banks will let you open a current account, credit status does not feature if you are not after a loan or overdraft. You can't open a bank account online, you need to present ID. Go into any bank with your passport/photo driving license and proof of address, they should be able to sort you out.

Now get back to the financial forum or wherever you should be!

The Post Office has an account for people who are 'off the radar', so benefits can be paid via the account instead of through giros.

GypsyMoth · 24/11/2010 19:43

do it online...natwest have a step account, good for re builing credit

SuePurblybiltByElves · 24/11/2010 19:44

I had this moving back from abroad - lost passport and no driving licence meant no photo ID so a non person. Britannia building soc worked for me and then transfer to Co-op.

If you have nothing, the post office do a "card" account, meant for people who have no other account to receive benefits. A couple of others do "basic" accounts but if you truly have no ID then the post office is all you'll find on the high street.

Online banking = no ID does it? That would have saved me some time Grin

SuePurblybiltByElves · 24/11/2010 19:44

Ah, x posted. Didn't think it would Smile

thisisyesterday · 24/11/2010 19:45

yes you can do it online. i bank with Smile and they've always been great

i don't know much about this kind of stuff admittedly, but i can't see why bad credit would stop you getting a regular bank account.
so i don't think anyone would turn you down

memoo · 24/11/2010 19:45

Natwests step account is brilliant, easy online banking.

BabbityRabbity · 24/11/2010 19:46

how did you get on?

SparkleRat · 25/11/2010 15:28

I work with a lot of clients in this kind of situation and apparently The Co - op will let you open a basic account (no debit card just a cash card, no overdraft e.t.c.) with minimal I.D. and you could also try the Post Office. Hope this helps, good luck!

scottishmummy · 25/11/2010 15:41

po is best bet,you need to avoid accounts that ask for minimum monthly credits
