to not know what's wrong with Fruit Shoots?

I should point out that DS doesn't have them.

But most MNers seem to be against fruit shoots and I don't actually know what's wrong with them.

Am I right in assuming that's it's because they contain aspartame or is there more to it than that?

I think it is the long list of ingredients in a drink that otherwise seems like a healthy fruit drink?

It's because they are marketed to be full of fruit and good for you which plainly they aren't

But like any junk food, they're OK as an occasional treat. And an excellent bribery tool ("If you're good while we go round the shops, I'll get you a Fruit Shoot for the way home")

They are not distilled water specially imported from the Pyrenees. They are not hand-squeezed hand-picked fresh fruit from the Eden project (no air-miles you know...). They are not smoothies made with active yoghurt which has been made in the airing cupboard while the home-made wholemeal bread rises.

In short they are so not Mumsnet that it can hardly be believed that such a thing even exists, let alone that anyone would willingly give them to little Tarquin or Jocasta.

Would rather DD got a taste for water and fruit juice.

There is nothing wrong with them in moderation.

However, they are high in sugar (aspartane) and there are healthier options available

Something with 'fruit' in its name should have to contain fruit. Its marketing shows how powerful the junk food lobby is in the UK

They're just squash. Don't buy them for at home, but DS1 (5) has them sometimes when we're out. Although these days he tends to ask for Coke.

Just taste one.

That's what is in a strawberry Fruit Shoot.

My MIL buys them for DD< she thinks they are healthy because they are fruit juice.

The name "Fruit Shoot" implies something healthy....which they are not. If my child was offered one at a party I would not be rushing over to snatch it out of his hand....however, I certainly have no intention of buying them either.

They are packed full of chemicals. DD1 (7) is allowed one sometimes if we are out but it will usually make her hyperactive and horrid, as well as giving her an upset tummy. DD2 (3) is not allowed them. The only time DD2 had one she necked the whole lot in record time and then wet herself.

I don't suppose they're any worse than Coke/Fanta/Sprite type drinks really, but it's the fact that they are marketed a (quite small IMHO) children that makes them insidious.

They taste foul and contain aspartame which we avoid.

I think the fruit shoot my 5's are better. Plus the bottles are great for drinks in the pram. Can't spill as much.

DD had one once and she puked everywhere! Now when we buy her a drink she requests a bottle of water - bless her!!!!!!!

I'd never hear of them before coming on MN but PFB was only tiny when I joined, so I'd no reason to have heard of them.

Are they super cheap or something? Just don't really understand why you'd reach for a fruit shoot instead of an actual juice drink (or water ).

well real fruit juice does contain lots of sugar! so is not particularly healthy to have lots of it!

I gave DS one once. I'm not precious about him trying stuff out that isn't crack or fags. He tried to beat me up. He was two. I'm not shitting you.

I'm started to get to the stage of keeping juice cartons in storage for days out now though for a treat instead though iyswim?

The My 5 ones are good sizes for lunchboxes though.

There's a wide range of Fruit Shoots. Some have aspartame in, some don't. There's even one range that is basically just diluted fruit juice.

I am not keen because they push the "fruit"/"healthy" message when they are (apart from the diluted juice ones, which I've only seen on sale in one place) just expensive squash (either sugar free or full of artificial sweetener). The marketing annoys me.

The DCs have them at parties/other people's houses, but I don't buy them (except the diluted juice variety, very occasionally).
