to think SA kidnap theory woman was right

There was a thread a few days ago from someone suggesting that the honeymoon couple who got carnapped and the wife killed was a set up by the husband.
Turns out that he has gone back to SA to "help with enquiries" and is denying that he had anything to do with it.
I think our Mn'er was right so apologies from me for flaming her for being insensitive ( though he's not been charged yet so I'll prepare for a flaming myself!)

wasn't there a story about him being millions of £s in debt too?

Nancy66 · 23/11/2010 07:51

Thread got removed didn't it? No idea why.

pooka · 23/11/2010 07:52

The taxi driver has been arrested and charged, as has an accomplice I think (Guardian this morning).

Not the husband. And I still think better not to speculate personally.

Caboodle · 23/11/2010 08:04

YABVU - I really dislike this kind of speculation.

SaggyHairyArse · 23/11/2010 08:09

The truth will come out in the end....it is only natural to speculate though.

NorthernLurker · 23/11/2010 08:10

The husband denies it and the police haven't said anything to suggest it - other than promising 'a revelation'. They are pursuing the line that the driver was involved. I have to say I do think the circumstances were unusual - that they push him out but shoot her. THat doesn't mean he had anything to do with it though. There is a suggestion on the link above that her family are concerned.

clam · 23/11/2010 08:21

I expect the thread was pulled because there were some dodgy allegations being aired.
Same may happen here... be careful.

ConstanceFelicity · 23/11/2010 08:33

Trial by mumsnet. Poor man.

BuntyPenfold · 23/11/2010 09:34

My DF said when the news came on'I would never get out of the car and leave you.'

He just would not do that. I know we would both be shot, but he would not have left me as this man left his wife, with a robber/kidnapper/rapist/who knows?
Would your other half?

ConstanceFelicity · 23/11/2010 09:37

I don't think you can tell what you would do in a situation like this. It's very easy to judge. This thread is making me sad.

amidaiwish · 23/11/2010 09:39

if someone opens the door and throws you out of a car you don't have much say in the matter.....

amidaiwish · 23/11/2010 09:41

don't forget the damage this will do to south africa's tourist industry. they will want to portray this as a planned domestic issue and not a random attack on honeymooners.

who cares, seriously, all this speculation is a bit prurient to say the least.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/11/2010 09:48

err not prurient, i meant distasteful

wannaBe · 23/11/2010 09:56

the only thing I thought when the story was reported was wtf were they doing driving round that part of cape town at night.

it's a well-known squatter camp, and tbh I am always Hmm at tourists who think that it's somehow cool to go round the roughest poorest parts of a country to see how the other half live, so to speak.

No-one deserves to have that happen to them, but equally people seem to lack common sense sometimes, and driving around areas like that at night is just asking for trouble.

AbsofCroissant · 23/11/2010 10:37

It's a bit stupid to speculate like this - no MNers, as far as I'm aware, were there or know what happened. It is unusual, and even my Mom who is the first to jump on the bandwagon to rubbish the old country (we left in the late 1990s) was saying that they were being monumentally stupid to ask to go into the township at night. (rather than the usual "see! This is what happens in SA! We were geniuses to move to the UK into the middle of winter. I'm amazed anyone still lives there, blah blah blah").

AbsofCroissant · 23/11/2010 10:40

But then, and this does make me sick, the tourist boards and some right numbskulls are turning the townships into tourist attractions. This could make people underestimate the (very real) dangers that exist in places like Kayalitsha and Soweto. (much like the fact that every couple of years a tourist gets eaten in Kruger Park, when getting out of their car to get a better look at a lion).

ttalloo · 23/11/2010 10:46

YANBU - I did wonder when the story first broke if the husband had something to do with it, for the same reason that quietlysuggests gave - the husband is usually the first suspect the police have.

But also YABU - speculating about it on t'internet isn't very nice because he hasn't been charged, and he could very well be absolutely innocent of any wrongdoing. (And I'm aware of my hypocrisy in posting, given what I've just written!)

Coralanne · 23/11/2010 10:57

It's not very often that something randomly happens.

AbsofCroissant · 23/11/2010 11:03

But unfortunately, murders are pretty common in SA, more so in Jo'burg than in Cape Town, but it does happen. Almost every single member of my family who is still out there has had some form of violet crime happen to them (mugging, carjacking, burglary) and acquaintances have had worse (been tied up in own home, shot), so it is believable. Even more so if you drive into a very dangerous area late at night.

twirlymum · 23/11/2010 11:23

I am surprised that the husband was allowed to leave the country after it happened. Surely he would have to stay there as a witness?

sherby · 26/11/2010 12:30

sounds like she wasn't wrong after all

elgnid0 · 31/12/2010 14:37

I wonder if the SA authorities would make statements to the effect that they have cctv evidence of meetings between the husband and the cab driver before and after the murder?,it would be incredibly stupid to use lies in any international extradition case, and of course you have the retention of one of the UKs most prominent publicist?,not a legal eagle but a man who makes a living out of turning your character into a glowing saint?,this man is distancing himself from the possibility that he may be the perpetrator, just as he distanced himself from his new wife by running away, why would a stranger like the man who helped him contact the police tell authorities that the husband was not dirty or dishevelled as you most certainly would had you been thrown from a moving car,why say he was pushed out of the window, its extremely difficult to be pushed through most car windows, opening the
door is instinctive and more likely,i for one feel this guy is a creep and max clifford will get his fingers burnt soon, i hope!
