AIBU to mention this in MN?

Ooh, my first thread and it's an AIBU!

Basically, I have worked with people with special needs since I left uni. I have spotted a niche in the market, and started making clothes for kids with SN as a hobby - trousers, weighted stuff etc.

Am I out of order to mention this sometimes in my posts on Mumsnet? I also offer advice when I can from my experiences, and I only put the "business" stuff in if relevant. I haven't seen anywhere about contributing money except for an advert, which as I've only been doing it a month and don't do it for much profit I can't afford at the moment.

you can do it, but only if you make some nice trendy"bibs that done't look like bibs" for teens.
why can't they make trendy ones with skulls on them?
sorry just had to post that

DanceInTheDark · 21/11/2010 22:42

If you are mentioning your business as an advertisement then yes you are being unreasonable. It doesn't matter if you can afford a proper advert or not.

2shoes · 21/11/2010 22:43

you can ask for suggestions on sn, but you can't advertise

sethstarkaddersmum · 21/11/2010 22:45

why don't you email MNTowers and explain the situation and ask if they'll give you a discount on their normal advertising rates? bet they would!

that's kind of more above board than just ignoring the rules and hoping no-one notices.

spikeycow · 21/11/2010 22:46

I too think the designs should be fashionable, with slogans and whatnot

purplepidjin · 21/11/2010 22:47

2shoes, I will happily make you some decent bibs, but I will be forced to make them look like a fashion accessory ;) Plus I think you've seen the posts I've written on the subject as they're all in SN Children.

I do try to mix it in with genuine advice from the "other" (non-parent) side. Eg, I'm quite good at coming up with daft ideas for reward schemes. DNeph hates stickers, so I got 4 empty coke bottles and some soft balls for him to earn...

Spikeycow, the inspiration for the whole thing was DNiece who has ASD and isn't toilet trained at 5. It's getting harder and harder to find nice trousers to fit over a nappy, but she loves climbing so is always flashing her pants. Fine at 5 but won't be so good at 12...

Have I got this right: you want to spread the word about your business but don't want to pay for advertising?

If you were a regular poster with a history of contributing to Mumsnet, then maybe mnhq wouldn't mind.

As it is, you want to take advantage of the captive audience on Mumsnet without any history on the site?

Sorry but to me this is a bit like all the slebs who are climbing over themselves atm to come on for a "webchat" just at the moment they happen to have a new book published Hmm.

Sorry, I admire your get-up-and-go, but YABU and I think you probably know it.

squarehat · 21/11/2010 23:07

Not sure weather or not your BU, if it's in context then I guess not. MNHQ probably won't like this thread tho, it is a bit like free advertising I suppose.

Think it's a great idea tho :)

scottishmummy · 21/11/2010 23:14

if you are touting for business pay fee.everyone has a hardluck story of some kind about being self employed

as a regular you know the score

and if you do lots of conspicuous product name dropping and buy my bibs it will look tacky

dont think there should be a oh its whatsherface, you know thingymebob - so let her off with the fee rule either

so good luck selling and with your new venture

purplepidjin · 22/11/2010 11:49

No, I agree that I should contribute in some way. I am trying to do that by offering advice if I think I can help, but £50 is out of reach at the moment. On another free forum I use, you can become a member sponsor for a minimum of a fiver, but there doesn't seem to be that option here.

Oops, thanks squarehat, didn't thin of that Blush. Sorry :(

Me either, hate that! Which is why I'm asking here - honest opinions.

Thanks, everyone :)
