Ok, firstly I don't smoke weed, I have in the past, it's not something I really enjoyed but each to their own, I don't have a problem with it however a family we know (our kids are the same age) smoke weed around their kids. Their house constantly smells of weed & the mother confided in me she smoked everyday throught both her pregnancies as well as using it for pain relief in labour. I am pretty shocked by this, aibu?

I completely agree with MrsDevere - excellent post imo.

My mother smokes strong pot/skink daily and it has had an effect on her life, and has imo contributed to the myriad mental health problems she has. Pot smokers are ineffectual wasters at best, cruel and self obsessed at worst.

The net result is that me and my brother, after seeing what pot smoking does to a person and their relationships, live miles away from our mother (I don't actually have relationship with her any more) and are ridiculously zero tolerance about drugs.

Again, anecdotal evidence, but you could deluge me with empirical research on the subject and i will still say that pot has an unbelievable pernicious effect on people and their families. It is not the same as a glass of wine to relax. You don't know what the hell is in that strain of pot; you know what is in the wine.

Confusing cause and effect here though. People with mental health difficulties/turbulent lives are more likely to take drugs, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the problem is the drug itself.

Well, I know a lot of families that smoked weed around their kids in the seventies - and actually none of the kids turned out terrible or harmed in any way. In fact they mostly think weed is a bit boring and silly.

I don't think it's good to smoke around your children, tobacco or weed, due to the secondary nature of inhalation, however, it's not that incredibly terrible and outrageous.

It bothers me that it is illegal, so you would presumably need to tell your child at some stage not to talk about it outside the house. Apart from the health issues, putting your children in a position where they are learning to keep secrets/tell lies seems pretty bad to me.
