Haven't been to tescos in about a year. Nothing and I mean nothing is where you expect it to be, huge Q's at the tills, loads of people just leaving their trolley in the middle of the aisle, didn't come out with half of what I wanted!

AIBU or have I just been spoilt by Waitrose and farmers markets? The only thing I came out with was chocolate biscuits and bread (as did everyone else around me by the looks of their trolleys!

Oh and I found ants in the raspberries DH bought me on his way home from work in the summer Angry

YA definatly NOT BU!

Anyone who shops at Tesco are STUPID!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 20/11/2010 22:54

I regularly shop at Tescos, and find them generally OK.

But this thread has raised one HUGE question for me - *Bubblebobble - what songs does one sing to a bottle of barbeque marinade? I could see a whole new thread opening up here! WinkGrin

NormalityBites · 20/11/2010 23:03

YABU

It is Tesco.

Not Tescos or Tesco's.

Tesco.

And yes it is crap, don't go in. Ever.

Kitta · 20/11/2010 23:11

I hate hate hate hate it

other than the whole ruining our lovely street, their fruit is shit, basically any thing other than orange, pear, banana, apple and grapes is exotic i?nt it.
Plums and rhubarb are exotic? ? ?
And their meat counter the use by date is so short. .. .

scoobytoo · 21/11/2010 08:06

I hate them all,,,asda Lidl tesco makes no difference and what I hate more than anything is the 2 or 3 for 1 offers. When shopping with a kids in tow I don't want to have to work out what is the best deal and feel like I have to come home with three of everything in case I lost out on a bargain. Cupboards full of stuff that you end just using or eating to get rid of it.
Grrr....
Why can't they just give the best price for ONE item...oh well I know the answer to that really.

I shop at markets/independents whenever possible

scoobytoo · 21/11/2010 08:08

Normalybites hahah! I hate that too....tesco's Asda'sssss
Funny you never hear people say Waitrose's though!!!!

saffy85 · 21/11/2010 08:48

I love Asda Grin hate Tesco with a passion but mainly coz it's a nightmare to get in and out the car park. It's thesize of aleast 2 football pitches but only has one entrance and exit. Fucking nightmare, worse than any checkout queue!

ShadeofViolet · 21/11/2010 08:56

The only reason I dont like Tesco is that they are very sneaky with the BOGOF or 2 for deals that they do and you can end up spending more trying to get a good deal.

But I love our store, and if you avoid the above its the best Supermarket round here. Cleaner than our local ASDA and much less busy.

Rockbird · 21/11/2010 09:02

I don't understand people who moan about the offers. If it's not something you use, don't buy it surely. For example, if the Muller little stars are on offer then great. They do work out cheaper than normal and dd eats loads of them. If granary pittas were on offer I wouldn't buy them because I wouldn't use them. I can't see the problem. And I never buy fruit in a supermarket anyway.

ragged · 21/11/2010 09:08

No particular malice for Tesco but I LOATHE all loyalty card schemes -- or should that be, DISLOYALTY card schemes. They do my head in.

Give me Lidl any day instead. What you see is what you pay, over and done with. Nobody trying to record or manipulate my shopping habits, ta.

ShadeofViolet · 21/11/2010 09:20

Rockbird - We buy Tesco High Juice. It used to be 98p per bottle, or 2 for £2 Hmm. Or they increase the price of an item, so that one tub of Pringles is £1.99 each BOGOF, but thats not the price of a normal single item. Or the Fairy gel that I buy - they make out a massive bottle is a great saving, but its actually cheaper to buy two smaller bottles.

I agree with you about offers, I only buy what I would normally, but its the sneakiness of some of the deals.

beebuzzer · 21/11/2010 09:25

I think it depends where you live and what is most convenient too. We have a small Saisbury's closest but it ends up being expensive and not having the things I need.

Ms Sparkle I am not stupid thankyou very much! lets not make it personal! :)

Rockbird · 21/11/2010 09:31

Ah ok. I tend to stick to more unadventurous things like yogurts :o I know where I am with those!

noeyedear · 21/11/2010 09:36

I find I always spend more money in Tesco than I do in Sainsburys. I think it might be because of the BOGOF offers. I normally go in there in an emergency, whereas I do online shopping in Sainsbury's. I also find even though it is more expensive, the quality is markedly different in Tesco than Sainsbury's, especially the meat. I bought Tesco Finest freerange chicken on Saturday because I thought the £1 for a whole chicken deal would be appalling, and the water that came out of it was ridiculous! You buy massive chicken drumsticks and then by the time they're cooked, they're half the size! And picking bits of fat out of your your macaroni cheese with bacon just ruins all the enjoyment of it! It's a false economy, IMO. The loyalty voucher scheme seems better than the Nectar card, but that's about it!

Rowgtfc72 · 21/11/2010 09:41

I shop online with Tesco-local store is a nightmare with a three year old.I used to work for them,if you think they treat customers badly you should see how they treat their staff

surfandturf · 21/11/2010 09:47

I hate going to supermarkets and would love to shop at our local town market but I's only on a Monday and I work full time. Online shopping all the way for me (or I send DH with a list!)Smile

I the interests of balance, another Tesco lover here. Why would SO many people be SO 'stupid' as to continue to shop there if it was more expensive or more stressful than other options?

I have an Asda and a Sainsbury's and a Waitrose all roughly the same distance away as well so it's not that big evil Tesco have pushed out the competition.
Now don't get me started on farmer's markets. Went to our local one recently, what a waste of time smugfest that was.
Maybe it's just that my local Tesco is great & my farmer's market is bobbins?

scoobytoo · 21/11/2010 10:17

Rockbird the reasons I hate the 2for1's are;

  1. someone in the queue in front of me often gets told "oh that's on 2for1" and so we all wait while someone runs to retrieve extra item that customer doesn't need.
  2. It's a shameless tactic to get us to consume more
  3. it's so environmentally unfriendly, it's a known fact how much food gets chucked out every week in the UK. By giving 2 lots of perishable items for the price of one you are effectively increasing the chance food will be wasted and chucked out.
  4. Obesity is a problem here too and just this week I saw they have 2for1 on bread treat items like croissant etc. Or the shameless would you like a massive bar of chocolate for a £1 at check outs in garages and WHS.
  5. Lastly supermarkets NEVER give anything away truely free. Either we pay for those offers through other pricing in everyday items or the supplier gets squeezed even further leading to closure of many farms around the country and lower pay for workers.

You say "if you don't want the offer don't buy the item"...if I go out to buy ONE item I would like to buy that ONE item without getting a second 'free' which as I just said we all ultimately pay for anyway.

Don't get me started on loyalty schemes either. Angry

ratspeaker · 21/11/2010 11:34

Oh my!
In the tesco camp here
My Clubcard Vouchers have been well used this year, got a new bed and mattress for DD2, driving lessons for DS2 with the double up scheme, so basically free, all for just shopping in the store
I have a choice of Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Lidl all around the same distance from me, so Tesco wins, same price for most basics and clubcard points as well.

We also have a co op nearby but its so useless. I went in earlier this year to get a cake, most on the shelf were past their sell by date

usualsuspect · 21/11/2010 11:40

I like Tesco and Adsa

Rockbird · 21/11/2010 11:44

OK, well firstly, there are lots of things on offer that aren't perishable. For example, most of the supermarkets seem to have been doing bogofs on the Homepride pasta bake sort of sauces (we won't get in to the rights and wrongs of buying them but it's the only thing DH can 'cook'!). They aren't perishable, I know we will use them. All good.

There are also lots of things on offer that aren't treats. And I speak as a fatso here, nothing would induce me to buy two lots of croissants if I didn't want two lots of croissants. No one holds a gun to your head to make you pick up the second box. You could actually just buy the one that you wanted and when the cashier mentions it, say no thank you. If I can do that, then I don't see why anyone else can't.

And I have never been in a queue where someone runs off for the second one, ever.

I've also never bought a bar of whole nut in WH Smith when offered either, because I don't want one. It's actually very easy to say no thanks.

While I accept that there are examples such as ShadeofViolet states where you have to have a sharp eye, and that no, supermarkets don't give things away, the deals aren't all bad. But it's easy to hold them responsible for all the wrong in the world, whether they are responsible or not. All the issues you have with the bogofs are you not taking personal responsibility.

tyler80 · 21/11/2010 11:48

"3) it's so environmentally unfriendly, it's a known fact how much food gets chucked out every week in the UK. By giving 2 lots of perishable items for the price of one you are effectively increasing the chance food will be wasted and chucked out."

Why shift the responsibility onto the shop rather than the consumer?

I frequently take advantage of buy one get one/two free offers but I have free will and therefore don't buy stuff that I can't use before the expiry date.

tyler80 · 21/11/2010 11:50

p.s. I'm doing my bit to reduce food waste by scoffing the puff pastry mince pies (pack of 4) i got for 15p last night Grin

undercovamutha · 21/11/2010 11:53

OP - YABU. You are clearly spoilt by being near a Waitrose!

If you had my choice - Asda, Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons, Tesco - you would embrace Tesco!

Went to Asda yesterday - horrific, absolutely horrific.
