To NOT thank these people on Freecycle

Messing · 19/11/2010 21:32

I have used Freecycle for a while now, and have given lots of stuff away and received stuff without any problems...until now.

I responded to an offer of a deep freeze, as we needed a spare one for the garage. It was listed as 'working condition', so I wasn't expecting it to be pristine - I thought maybe dents, scratches etc but fine for the garage.

So, DH and I went round to the people's garage to collect it. Words cannot describe what a disgusting state it was in. As I said, I didn't expect something given away free to be great but this was filthy - covered in mould, and really dirty inside - bits of food everywhere. It also smelt like something had crawled in several years ago and died. There had clearly been no effort at all to clean it - not even a quick squirt and wipe with Dettol.

At that stage, DH and I were too embarassed (and shocked) to say 'thanks, but no thanks..' so ended up taking it home. It's now sitting in our garage, until I pluck up the courage to go and deal with it. TBH, I am considering just taking it to the tip.

Normally when I collect something from someone on Freecycle, I send a nice thank you email telling them how the item has been put to good use etc. In this case, I can't bring myself to do that (am even tempted to complain to them or to Freecycle - but DH thinks that would be OTT).

Again, I stress that I understand the item was free BUT... surely the point of the site is to pass on your unused items to someone else, not to dump your filthy junk to save yourself a trip to the tip.

Just to give an example...I Freecycled DC's baby clothes recently - several binbags' worth. They weren't in great condition (some already 2nd hand when I got them) but perfectly usable and washed. I could have just been bone-idle and not bothered to wash them, just passed them on with puke/poo stains etc. But I wouldn't do that, just out of common decency - obviously what these people lack!

And....breathe.

SO - AIBU to not thank them? WIBU to complain?
(Suspect the latter is a definite 'yes' Grin)

You dont have to say thank you if you dont want to. Take it to the tip - its what they should have done in the first place!

MerryMarigold · 19/11/2010 21:37

Give it a good clean and leave it open for a long time! Don't say thanks tho.

shongololo · 19/11/2010 21:51

is it broken, or just dirty? Surely the point of Freecycle is to stop dumping stuff that still has usefulness? If you dump it because you cant be bothered to clean it, then you are no really following the ethos of freecycle.

A good bucket full of bleach, a couple of scourers, you will have a free working feezer within an hour.

If is not broken, then YABVU.

SuePurblybiltByElves · 19/11/2010 21:53

Nobody has ever thanked me - and I don't give away manky stuff! I always email though.
See if you can clean it, I've had freezers from the tip that have come good.

Onetoomanycornettos · 19/11/2010 21:54

I agree with you, that's really shameful. I got a second hand fridge from someone, and it was a bit old looking, it was clean and usable. Yuk to those people!

Onetoomanycornettos · 19/11/2010 21:55

And, its not clear it will scrub up. If the seals have gone anywhere, the mould may have gone inside...you need to check those before launching at it with the bleach.

readywithwellies · 19/11/2010 21:55

Freecycle states that if you get there and don't want it, you should say so. YABU

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/11/2010 21:56

nope....id tip it. sorry for not following the 'ethos' but my ethos is not to clean something that filthy that some lazy bastard couldnt be arsed to dispose of themselves or at least keep it in working order by giving it a quick once over with a damp cloth.

id not be putting my food in there at any rate, bollocks to that!

Messing · 19/11/2010 22:00

shongololo, I see what you mean about dumping it not being in the spirit of Freecycle. I honestly don't mind if it was a bit dirty, but it's really, really rank. Even by DH's (very low) standards of cleanliness.

But you're right, dumping it would be bad.

YANBU.

It's a shame you felt you had to take it, and are now lumbered with it. I understand why you felt obliged - there's something about Freecycle which makes you feel you have already accepted the item before you've even seen it. In future though if something similar ever happens to you again, remember that you are doing the offerer a favour taking away their stuff for free saving them a trip to the dump or the cost of paying the council to collect, so if when you see the item you realise it isn't for you, decline it. Prepare an excuse in advance eg "it's bigger than I expected and it won't fit". If you were buying from the small ads and saw something you didn't like you wouldn't feel you had to buy it.

I suggest you do complain to your group's moderator, asking them to send a polite reminder to everyone that Freecycle is a not a free collection service for disposing of rubbish. The people who gave you their freezer may not have meant to take advantage - everyone has different views about what is salvagable and what is beyond further use.

Don't waste any more time on this freezer. Take it to the dump. Then place a wanted ad for a freezer.

maktaitai · 19/11/2010 22:19

I have to say I thought freecycle was a free collection service for disposing of rubbish - or at least stuff that you can't be bothered to clean or fix. They should have been honest about the condition though.

iheartdusty · 19/11/2010 22:31

maktaitai, are you serious???

Firawla · 19/11/2010 22:55

i think you should have just made an excuse and not taken it, although may have been awkward but now you have made an extra job for yourself sorting it out or dumping it. if it was in a filthy condition and they were not going to clean it they should atleast have made it clear on their listing that it will be in need of a full clean :S

nameymcnamechange · 19/11/2010 22:56

Re-freecycle it, stating that you got it yesterday from freecycle but it is minging, (although working) and you are passing it straight on because you can't face the clean-up job.

Someone will have it.

LaurieScaryCake · 19/11/2010 22:59

I would take it - chest freezers are insanely expensive now

mamatomany · 19/11/2010 23:01

I'm going to Freecycle my freezer soon, if I could be arsed to clean it up it would be going on ebay.

Messing · 19/11/2010 23:09

nameymcnamechange - that's a good idea. Although I can't be too honest about the minging-ness as i suspect noone would come. Will just say it could do with a good clean.

Go and put it back outside their house with a note saying you've changed your mind.

onmyfeet · 20/11/2010 01:14

I am with MrsBonkers, return it.
Next time have an excuse ready, just in case. Like, "Oh, I thought it was a mini fridge/upright model" better than being saddled with trash.
