To be keeping dd off school today?

She has a cough, she not ill in herself at all, but when she gets going nothing can stop her hacking away.

I picked her up from school yesterday and the TA mentioned how bad it was when they were all sat on the carpet in the afternoon. So I made the decision to keep her off today in the hopes of getting a Dr's appt for her, but it it looks like I will have to wait until tomorrow morning. I am just waiting for the surgery to call back and confirm if they can squeeze her in today.

So now I have a fairly well, if coughing, 5 yr old at home and I feel a bit guilty about keeping her off. Doesn't help that she had a few days off 2 weeks ago because I got ill when visiting my parents and wasn't well enough to drive home for the bginning of the school week.

The school were very understanding and said it was fine, but I am wondering if they will get annoyed about her attendance. She is in year 1 and has had about 4 days off so far this term.

I am probably worrying too much, but in my defence I am 30 weeks pregnant, nauseous and hormonal, therefore not terribly rational.

So have I done the right thing?

She's five year's old. Her education won't suffer a jot. The education of 29 other children might though because the teacher will have an eye on you daughter for the entire day wondering whether she needs to contact you or not to take her home. Wait until you have been to the doctors and been given the all clear. Probably not serious in the least but a few days in the warm never did a five year old any harm, esp if you haven't got to take time off.

PS: just reread OP. If TA mentioned it, bet they think she needs a day or two off too.

YANBU. That is from a proper mother. Our DD was off school for four days last week. She initially had a virus and a massive fever. It developed into a chest infection requiring antibiotics. The school was pressuring me to take her back, despite their own literature advoacting children be kept off school if the have a fever.
You are her mother, go with your instint.

You have done the right thing. I did the same with my dd earlier this week. Have a nice mummy and daughter day and don't worry about school. Also don't bother the doctor if she's just got a cough. Bung some Calpol down her and put CBeeBees on.

From a "proper" mum.

yes of course

doubt she's going to miss anything important in Year 1

don't know if I qualify as a proper mother though Wink

Another YANBU Grin

DD1 just back to school today after 3 days off with a really sore throat and cough, better to minimilise (sp?) spread of germs at this time of year than making classmates ill Grin

Aw, thanks for reassuring me, I have been beating myself up here (sill woman that I am).

I have to take her to the drs sadly because the cough mixture is doing nothing to stop it and she had an incidence of a cough lasting months and months back in the spring.

She had to have blood tests, asthma checks, anti-biotics etc which were all clear, but nothing shifted it. Eventually it was diagnosed as a "habitual cough" in that her body was just so used to coughing it couldn't stop. It eventually tailed off on its own.

Also dp has been ill for a month and has just been diagnosed with a deep seated chest infection which he is on very strong anti-biotics for now. So i need to get her checked over.

My ds had asthma when little. Didn't want to suggest this as a possibility at first to worry you. If the cough mixture does nothing, ask the dr if a ventolin inhaler would be worth trying. dd never had diagnosed asthma but when she had the occasional bad cough, the doctor said there was absolutely no harm in giving a puff or two and it helped enormously. Asthma isn't just wheeziness it's about a long term hard to shift cough too.

Rocklover · 18/11/2010 09:51

They tried dd with inhalers before and it didn't really help. Maybe it would be an idea to try again as she seems to have some sort of cough alot of the time.

Try rubbing some, Vick's, into the sole of her feet to help alleviate the coughing.

Whenever my 13 year old gets a cough the Vick's application always seems to help enormously.

thinking of you and yours this Christmas if I don't bump into you before
