2 car hour journey at 37 weeks pregnant

We are going to visit my grandparents at the weekend in norfolk. We live in north London so looking at a 1.5 - 2 hour car journey. Its only one night.

We are taking the hospital bags and enough clothes with us for a week in case I go into labour and have to stay there. Oh and my mums coming so both my birth partners will be there.

Thats not unreasonable is it? The hospital there can only be better than our local one (2nd worst in London and closing next year) and besides, nothing might happen.

DP wont tell his family we are going away as they'd try to stop us... [hmmm] Makes me feel like Im totally crazy!

I second the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital as being a fab place to give birth! Just remember to take your notes with you.

It probably isn't difficult for the N&N to be the best hospital in the county. It's there or the QE at King's Lynn. So it's number 1 in a two horse race.

And the QE is appalling. Grin

At 39 weeks pregnant with first child I went about four hours away from home for the weekend. Too hot to bother to drag bag/car seat etc with me. Lo and behold went into labour on the Saturday afternoon and gave birth that night in a fab local hospital. No notes. No birth plan. No midwife . Absolutely no problem and turned out to be a fab experience with everyone rushing around lending me nappies, clothes for baby etc. When I look back it was the most wonderful surprise experience. So don't worry!!

you will be fine, i have travelled from norfolk to essex (2hrs) at that stage in all my pregnancies, later in fact!

take your notes etc and if you do give birth in norfolk then the n&n is quite good, have had all four of mine there, there is also a birthing centre in eye, the gilchrist birthing centre its called, that is meant to be very nice :)

good luck xxx

What on earth do your in-laws think will happen to you?

You're very unlikely to have the baby on the M11.

I believe people do have babies in Norfolk. They have hospitals, midwives, electricity and everything!!

(well only in the cities)

Sugarmuppet · 17/11/2010 15:48

I travelled 2 hours each way to my work when I was pregnant! Would have put my hospital bag in the boot towards the end though if i'd made it that far!

Showaddywaddy · 17/11/2010 16:22

We do have electricity. But only on every 3rd Sunday as we think too much electricity invokes demons.

That said we don't have mains water and rely on a spring and er no mains sewage either. But that's probably just us.

Some of the midwives have even delivered human babies.

I think only if you call DC Alan (Partridge) for a boy and Delia for a girl. Grin
