to suggest to cafe staff that they correct the errors on their menu?

The cafe in question is part of a major chain, and has several errors on the menu - displaying incorrect grammar, spelling and punctuation.

The menu is printed, (by a professional company) framed and laminated.

I have to use the cafe regularly due to commitments and location. Every time I see the glaring errors, I wince. The food is fine and the staff friendly, so I have no other gripes. They have a comments box which invites you to 'let us know how you feel - the good and the bad!'

Was I being unreasonable, in a bored moment, to list all the errors, plus corrections and a small explanation of each, and put the list in their comments box? Will they now think I am mad, and spit in my tea? Grin

YANBU. This annoys me too; if it's really bad, I avoid places where they clearly take no pride in how they market themselves or ask anyone to proof-read what they're printing. I mean, one or two mistakes or typos, I could forgive, but in an official menu, with multiple examples? It's just shoddy.

I would do it anonymously though, and not admit it to anyone if asked.

If it's big chain how are you sure they'll know it's you? Is it very local?

As a cafe worker ..I know we would laugh at your suggestions, and you would be forever known as the lady with too much time on her hands [polite version] Wink

I can be pedantic. In cafes usually about: clean cutlery, cold food, teeny moving things on lettuce leaves. If the food tastes good and is reasonably priced and the staff are friendly - eat up and enjoy with a big smile. Life's too short. If it's the Cafe Royal you might have a point - otherwise YABU.

clean cutlery, cold food, teeny moving things on lettuce leaves

That's not pedantic, that's being normal Shock

Did i misunderstand your post? Everyone would complain (although certainly not get irate, just go ahead and request a change, etc) about the above.. right?

Are brits so desperate to avoid complaining about horrid service that these 3 are acceptable? Sad

Our local chinese used to do a range of dishes with "green peepers" I was always tempted to give it a go.

pmsl at this thread - thankyou all!

OP, YANexactlyBU ... but you are being a heck of a pedant.

I personally wouldn't bother to suggest a whole load of individual corrections to a menu. At the very most I would make a general comment about it (but only because they invite customer comment and I would think it a shame they were giving a bad impression through their menu when everything else is nice) ...!

leek and potatoe soup

Fuck me how did Dan Quail get into catering ?

cruelladepoppins · 16/11/2010 22:14

Presumably he is on the menu ...?

Cafe near us, privately owned, lovely people, average coffee - atrocious signs! Grin but they are so nice I couldn't upset them.

Some of theirs are properly made too!

Burger King has a promotion going at the moment for wraps - the vegetarian ones are have the beef name under them and the beef the veggie name under them - the are obviously wrong - clear to see at a brief glance - how is this not picked up before it gets printed - let alone distributed!?

NormalityBites · 16/11/2010 23:32

They may know it was me because the box isn't exactly in a secret place and they probably saw me put the letter in - I'm in there twice a week on the same days and the same staff are on - they'd say hello to me in the street - so they may well know Grin Plus I'm the only one reading English grammar texts in their cafe whenever I'm in there - unless everyone else has them hidden under their newspapers.

I used to run a cafe, shop and sandwich takeaway etc, I'm very familiar with menu and sign writing. I have no problems with individuals making mistakes in informal settings, but professionally printed errors in promotion and marketing get me every time!

But I did say it was a very nice letter Blush

Yadnbu! This drives me mental! I used to be a waitress, and I always had to point out the spelling errors on the menu. I think it looks unprofessional!
I'm currently working for someone who sells 'stuning cheeses'! >
