James Blunt is going to sing the Taliban into submission

Mr Blunt is going abroad at Christmas to sing for our soldiers and influence the Taliban.

He comes from a military family; but he seems a much better singer than a soldier.

When he was an army Captain he led a tank
convoy.ANd said " I did not know if I was going in the right direction. I presume he saw a sign saying "Newcastle 20 miles" and realised he was up the creek

You leave my Jimmy alone - he is utterly perfect Angry

Hassled · 16/11/2010 13:17

God bless the little Bluntser. He'll do well, you mark my words.

Alieight · 16/11/2010 13:22

Well, he's already prevented World War III, so maybe it'll work Hmm

Ooopsadaisy · 16/11/2010 13:23

If I was the Taliban and James Blunt sang at me I'd certainly drop my weapons and run howling for the hills. He doesn't rock my lot I'm afraid.

ShatnersBassoon · 16/11/2010 13:27

Let's hope the Taliban don't share their musical tastes with Uncle Bryn.

I saw Blount on Have I Got News For You a few weeks ago, and I'm loathed to admit, he seemed like a nice bloke.

TBH, I don't think much of this individual either way. OTOH, I do think it is great that he is entertaining the tropps. When we lived in Oman and the second gulf war started, the turns would stop off in the Sultanate and could be spotted at the Hyatt.

GabbyLoggon · 16/11/2010 13:43

I like Blunts song. I would have his "carry you home" sang at my funeral. (But not just yet.)

I think that a huge recorder choir of infant school children would be a far better weapon than one pop singer. You know the sort of thing I mean - any number of descant recorders, all tuned to very slightly different pitches, being played out of time and out of tune with eachother. Oh, and playing some repetitive tune over and over and over.....

Seventeen choruses of Merrily We Roll Along, and the taliban would be begging for mercy!

LetThereBeRock · 16/11/2010 13:47

Poor soldiers.Haven't they suffered enough without adding torture to the mix?

penguin73 · 16/11/2010 13:50

Maybe you'd like to go out and give the troops something to take their minds of where they are and what they are doing with loved ones thousands of miles away for a little while?

Nope, thought not.

+1 - don't tell anyone. One of my friends has never forgiven me for ripping the piss out of her for going to a JB concert.

Perhaps he could lead an army of 30 something middle-class female fans who could beat the Taliban into submission with their Cath Kidston bags and LK Bennett knee length boots. And liberate the Afghan women by providing Marion Keyes novels and Take That CDs. Grin

LetThereBeRock · 16/11/2010 14:13

They could at least give them someone who can sing. They deserve that surely?

LetThereBeRock · 16/11/2010 14:14

And I don't see what that has to do with the fact that James Blunt,is a terrible singer,Penguin.

I can't imagine he'd be their first choice.

penguin73 · 16/11/2010 14:38

Believe me (from experience) any entertainment/distraction is welcome and the list of entertainers willing to do it, particularly at Christmas, is very short so hats off to him for doing do (and the other entertainers who are also making the effort)

And you don't manage to stick around in the charts, retain a record deal and appear on TV/radio shows regularly if everyone thinks you are a terrible singer, some people obviously quite like him.

ShirleyKnot · 16/11/2010 14:41

stupid people with terrible taste and shit in their ears.

I would like to go out and entertain the troops, actually penguin73. I don't know what sort of act I could cobble together, but I'd have a go if someone asked me to. Therefore, I feel I can criticise the decision to send Blunt over to caterwaul sing.

penguin73 · 16/11/2010 22:18

Course you can, it's called freedom of expression.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 16/11/2010 23:51

There's nothing wrong with James Blunt. I think he is very good.
Frankly I would send god damned fucking Wagner over to sing to the Taliban! He would be much more effective! I know that I would surrender if he sang at me! And if we were really lucky, someone would put him out of our misery with a well placed ak47 bullet!!

loftylorrie · 17/11/2010 07:33

Really, REALLY don't understand some people's blind hatred of poor James. His music isn't among the greats, but it's not terrible either. There's SO much worse out there, yet Mr. Blunt seems to get much more flak than any other artist with a hugely popular song. And bear in mind the song everyone gripes about, "You're Beautiful" was released six effing years ago.
You can't judge an artist on one song, FFS.

You know what I think it is? It's because he sounds a bit posh, so everyone snarfs and goes "Look at that posh tosser trying to pretend he's normal!" then dismisses him Hmm At least, this is the impression I get from everyone I've ever known who hates James. And believe me, it's hatred. Which is a shame, cause he seems like a nice enough bloke. A bit Tim-nice-but-dim, but that never hurt anyone.

/rant
This ridiculous, petty hate-fest really gets on my nerves. In case you couldn't tell.
