Does it matter that dd's teacher consistently spells my (and consequently dd's) surname wrong?

And I don't mean Tailor instead of Taylor.

I mean completely wrong.

Along the lines of Postletwat instead of Postlethwaite

DD gets letters from her HT addressed to Mr not Miss. Admittedly her name is a (fairly obscure) boys name, but she's in Y13 - you'd think they would have worked it out by now, especially since she's well known to the HT/ senior staff.

Of course it matters, it's your (plural) name. I've had the same experience as Badgers when people reply to sodding emails that a. have my name in the email address and b. I have put my name at the end as a sign-off. With my first name, FGS, from people who I have met several times. And the name they have used may only differ by one letter but it is pronounced differently. Just Not Paying Attention At All.

It would annoy me. I would say something. It is rude.

My maiden name was an unusual spelling of a not-that-common surname - I have been asked whether I am sure it is spelt the way I spell it Hmm. At least it was pretty easy to pronounce though (although some always managed to change it to the more common variety) - my married name has the distinction of also being the least common way of spelling it BUT this also renders it unpronounceable to some.

It's good manners to make sure you are addressing someone correctly (verbally or in writing) - and if you are teaching small children, it's a jolly good idea to make sure you know how their names are spelled properly so you can keep an eye on their spelling of it too!

Maybe it's an admin error as suggested.

Just send a very short note to the head:

"Unfortunately your records have our surname as XXXXXXX, it is YYYYYYYYY. Yours etc"

It does matter. Kids like their names right on swimming certificates etc. I had this problem, and made a polite suggestion to the office staff that there may be an administrative error. It took three attempts as the one of the office bods told me it didn't really matter and did nothing about it.
Final attempt I called her by a different name, she corrected me, to which I replied 'It doesn't really matter does it?'
Needless to say name change was immediately implemented.

Definately tell the teacher -YANBU.

Has DD noticed? I know that sounds odd but the teacher spelt the surname wrong all year of the youngest child I nannied and she never noticed. She was 7.
